one of my favorite things about soc is that it’s different from most ya novels with a “quest” because the characters aren’t doing any of this because they’re good people or they want to save the world and all the people in it; they do it for the money first and foremost and i think it’s an interesting distinction from most other novels because the main group isn’t necessarily strictly the good guys or the bad guys

i love this too. i also love that none of them are the Chosen Ones, that none of them have a Destiny to Fulfill by going on this Quest. they’re all in it because they have something to gain. none of them have to go on this adventure, but they do, because they’re just kids trying to make the best life for themselves possible. they’re real people with real motives, and it’s inspiring, how even though i don’t have some Great Prophecy lined up for me at birth, i can make my own path. god that sounds cheesy, but yall know what i mean.

Kaz was harsh to Jesper because he reminded him of Jordie and hes too afraid of getting close to him because it hurts too much

I wish people explored Kaz and Wylan relationship more

HIGHKEY AGREE one of my pet peeves with the fandom is that people play off wylan as the sweet, innocent one, but people forget how much he picked up from kaz?? by the end of the duology he pulled off a “very passable imitation of kaz’s glare” like sure this kid started out a smol™ but thanks to kaz, he’s definitely not anymore, and i would love to read more about kaz’s opinion of wylan and how he grew over the time they worked together, and if they continued to conspire together (whether via canon works or fan works)

I love soc and the writing but the dialogue is a little weird. It makes more great quotes and stuff but if u step back, nobody would ever talk to their friends like that. Sometimes its really good and natural but others is way to metaphorical and poetic

I actually watched a video the other night about dialogue in real life vs. dialogue in films and books, and it explained that in the majority of media, the conversations are usually stunted and robotic, and more often in YA fic/teen drama movies, any normal way of speaking is usually thrown out the window for the sake of #aesthetic. I definitely agree with this, but I can’t answer this and not remind everyone of this gem: “You know what the really big bosses do? They pay someone to pay someone to …”
