How many types of Scholars are there at Eton? I’m confused 😭

There are two types of “Scholars”.

1. King’s Scholars

– Often simply called “Scholars” or “Collegers,” these are the up to 70 boys who win a Foundation (King’s) Scholarship by examination and board in College House under the Master-in-College. They wear the traditional black gown over their tail-coat uniform.

2. Oppidan Scholars

– These are boys (outside College House) who earn the honorary title “Oppidan Scholar” by achieving a specified number of top-class results (“Distinctions”) in the school’s internal Trials. The award carries no financial benefit but entitles them to the post-nominal “OS” on school lists.
