A friend of mine joked about my and another friend’s characters being the dragon and phoenix, so I went and read a bit on them. In Chinese mythology, they’re apparently a symbol of everlasting marriage, or a perfect couple, because the dragon is yang and the phoenix is yin. Now the phoenix is often depicted female and is described as the wife, but interestingly also…. called “king of all birds” in China. So I’m like, dat’s gay //shot

Another interesting thing to note is that “dragon and phoenix” is “longfeng” (the characters written over there), but “feng” is supposedly often used to describe a male phoenix. Tho ofc, the origin of using “feng” instead of “fenghuang” (er…gender neutral term for phoenix?) is simply bc “long” (dragon) has only one character. But I guess it can be gay in interpretation if you like.

Don’t quote me on any of this, I’m far from being knowledgeable about Chinese mythology or language.

I didn’t realize until I was coloring it that maybe the other way around would make a bit more sense color-wise since Shinobu (dragon)’s black and Ikue (phoenix)’s white but yang is white and yin is black LMAO. But well, aesthetically, I kinda wanted the opposite more with like, Shinobu with scales and Ikue with wings. Anyway, this was a fun sketch!
