I was tagged by oppreciate to list some of the things I collect or have collected. I am at a moment in my life in which I’m trying to divest myself of many things I’ve collected, so these are mostly things I used to collect:
1) CDs. (The largest portion of my CD collection is cast recordings and soundtracks, followed by vocal albums, followed by rock/pop, then jazz, then everything else. I have a couple thousand CDs. I also have probably 100 LPs and who knows how many digital-only albums.)
2) DVDs (I have several hundred of them. About half are musicals and/or animated films and tv shows. There’s a big chunk of superhero and science-fiction (although really that just means Star Wars and Star Trek). The rest are a mixture of classics and things bought on a whim. I mostly stopped buying DVDs when Netflix started offering streaming. Since moving to NY and acquiring a large, hi-def TV with a Blu-Ray player, I’ve started buying Blu-Rays, but not nearly at the rate I used to buy DVDs.
3) Comics (When I moved to New York, I gave away all my individual issues and sold hundreds of trade paperbacks. I am in the process of getting rid of another few dozen collections and graphic novels, leaving about three shelves worth of my favorites.)
4) Other books (A lot of plays and theater-related. A lot of Jewish-related including more bibles than anyone needs because I went through a phase where I was into different translations and commentaries. Again, before I moved to NY I sold hundreds and hundreds of books, and I’ve got about 200 more on my floor waiting to go to the Strand right now.)
5) Playbills. (If you’re reading this, you would probably cry if I told you how many went into the recycling bin this summer.)
I guess that’s it, unless you count my relatively small video game collection (and again, it got smaller when I moved to NY and I gave away my Atari and my NES, and it got smaller again last week when I sold my Gameboy). I also have a large collection of photographs (like, from my life, not “art”) and a collection of every issue of the school newspaper I worked on from all four years of high school and things like that. I used to have a large collection of USY t-shirts. Etc.
I don’t know. I’m in a weird place in relation to the whole concept of collections right now. I’m sure I’m forgetting things, either that I used to collect or that I currently have but don’t think of as a collection despite owning a million of them.
I’m not tagging anyone except comedyaintpretty because I got a glimpse of his apartment during a video produced for his birthday roast and I feel like I need some more info. But if you got this far and you collect things you think we’d like to read about, by all means, consider yourself tagged.
