Toxic Insecurity (I fucking promise there is a good reason I'm comparing some anime catboy to jimmy hear me out)

Spoilers for mouthwashing and the donghua ringing fate (*cough*whichyoucanwatchforfreewithenglishsubtitlesonyoutube*cough*)

Jimmy and Eden are remarkably similar characters in terms of their actions and motivators. They're both men who fail to live up to ideals society sets for them (not being ambitious enough to climb to higher positions within their company, or at the very least, Jimmy not being capable, whereas Eden is implied to be too scared of failure to even try). They feel laughed at and mocked by the people around them, regardless of whether or not that's truly the case, and their insecurity is what drives them to use their workplaces and job titles to abuse women in their lives, and in Jimmy's case, try to take out the entire tulpar crew. While ringing fate doesn't have the same critiques of capitalism and dangerous workplaces offered by mouthwashing, I do think it was very bold for them to make clear what sort of person Eden is after humanizing and portraying him as a goofy, lovable sort of guy for most of the series, because we like to think monsters show themselves early, that the kinds of people capable of doing the things these two do are obviously predators, but that's not how things work, and it's important to acknowledge that the same people we view as friends and colleagues are still able to make the choice to destroy the lives of other people.

i think what really gets me is that you watch episode 3, and you're by no means having a bad time, but you think to yourself "this show is great, but i think i know what emotional beats its going to hit and what kinds of stories its going to tell". and then you're so fucking wrong.

i finally saw the first episode of ringing fate's jp dub! i think i prefer hanazawa's ah gan but i like bian jiang's (? god i hope i'm romanizing his name correctly i've had to run some CN sites through google translate to hunt down the voice actor's name) performance as zhang san more! i think ah gan's original voice actress sounds really cute, but hanazawa makes her sound a bit older which is refreshing compared to ah gan's usual childish voice. i've got shit JP skills but she also refers to herself explicitly as an adult so it feels like a more suitable voice in that regard. while it helps make him feel more menacing umehara's delivery of zhang san's lines are a lot deeper which feels weird. good dub overall though! and it seems like they're rolling with the names used in the ENG subtitles bar ah gan and zhang san who are now kaname and saburo. also zhang san uses watashi, which is funny, i almost expected him to be an ore-sama type of guy. wonder if black zhang san's also going to use watashi or boku
