Creative Work: “A Letter to My Brotha’s”
Dear Brotha’s:
Never doubt that we love you for who you are. Whether you’re dark-skinned, light-skinned, albino, gay, straight, bisexual, on the down low, or anything alike, we value you & your presence. But, our society has failed to make this clear. It doesn’t matter how you identify or who you love as long as you’re being the best person that you know you can be. To all the black men who are publicly out & proud, I encourage you to continue doing what you’re doing. People will leave your side, but those who truly love you will understand that the only thing that matters is that you’re happy doing what you want to do. To all the black men who are currently on the “down low”, always remember that it gets better. You won’t always have to feel the need to hide your identity. So don’t think that what you’re doing is wrong. I love you, we love you, & we hope that you’ll be able to understand that one day.
I chose to write a letter to all of the black men who may are both proud of their identity & those who are having problems with expressing who they are. One thing we have failed to do is help them understand that they are valued regardless of what mainstream media and society says. I hope that my audience will understand that my words are genuine. I ultimately hope that they can feel the hurt in my words. I hurt for those black men who struggle with understanding where they fit in in our society. Through this letter, I hope other people will feel that our black men are valued as well and want to attempt to make that known. We must learn to uplift one another so that we all feel valued in society.
