i think in a lot of cases people see characters like sherlock as more complex than characters like john because the way they are written, the audience more immediately identifies with john. i think this is due mainly to point of view, but also to the way sherlock is presented as ‘different’ or seemingly more isolated than john. john is actually both of these things too, but it’s not as evident from the start. once people characterize john as a normal guy, someone who’s like them, it’s easy to move on and try to decode the mystery that is sherlock holmes. 

i think the audience doesn’t generally analyze john or see him as interesting because john himself doesn’t either. john’s point of view kind of precludes people from immediately seeing him as a complex character.
