Carnivale is great for a lot of reasons, but for me, it's that it gets 2 extremely vital things about life in rural areas (especially the south and midwest) that almost all other media gets wrong:
1.) the speech patterns/slang. most people here still talk almost exactly like the characters on Carnivale, which is why the dinner theater caricature of accents and slang you usually see is so obnoxious. rural people don't talk like cartoon cowboys, they talk like they are from 100 years ago.
