🌧️ Orange Weather Alert Issued for Coimbatore and Nilgiris from May 27: Heavy Rains Expected Across Tamil Nadu
As the Southwest Monsoon continues to advance across Tamil Nadu, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange weather alert for Coimbatore and the Nilgiris districts starting Tuesday, May 27, 2025, extending over the next four days. Residents and authorities are urged to stay vigilant, as heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in these areas, especially in the ghat regions.

Orange Alert (Heavy to Very Heavy Rain):

Coimbatore (ghat areas)
Isolated Heavy Rainfall Predicted In:
Tiruppur
Dindigul
Virudhunagar
Erode
Krishnagiri
Dharmapuri
These districts are expected to receive significant rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, potentially affecting transportation, daily activities, and local infrastructure.
🌩️ Thunderstorms, Lightning, and Widespread Rain
In addition to heavy rain, the RMC forecasts light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places across:
Tamil Nadu
Puducherry
Karaikal
The monsoon has further advanced into parts of the central Arabian Sea, remaining areas of Tamil Nadu, and sections of the Bay of Bengal, marking a vigorous start to the rainy season.

From 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, several weather stations across the region recorded significant rainfall:
Valparai: 41.8 mm
UPASI Tea Research Foundation (Coonoor): 38 mm
Nagercoil: 17.5 mm
Udhagamandalam (Ooty): 15 mm
Kanniyakumari: 14 mm
Pechiparai (Kanniyakumari District): 11.5 mm
Coimbatore: 7 mm
Meanwhile, in the Nilgiris, extreme rainfall was recorded during the 24-hour period ending 8:30 a.m. on Monday:
Avalanche: 35 cm
Upper Bhavani: 30 cm
Emerald: 18 cm
Gudalur Bazaar: 15 cm
Wentworth Estate & Pandalur: 14 cm
Upper Gudalur: 13 cm

Adding to the weather dynamics, the RMC has announced the likelihood of a low-pressure area forming over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around Tuesday. This system could further enhance rainfall activity across coastal and interior Tamil Nadu.
