Thinking about Ara’s design
This isn’t a “someone cheated lol” post, this is a “I designed Ara before I cared about genetics and instead of giving her mom a design that would explain this, got really attached to the default mom because she reminds me of my friends’ mom”
Also I was originally going to draw Norman and Mom but got stuck on Norman’s hairline and got mad and replaced them with their sprites instead
Actually I did give Mom one purple streak in her hair to claim that she just had dormant purple hair genes, but yknow
The reason Ara is designed the way she is, is because I designed her last of my original three Pokémon ocs. There was Queenie, my USUM oc, Fayette, my SWSH oc, and finally Ara, my ORAS oc. The first two were direct references to my original playthrough of their respective games, but Ara stumped me. I first played AS when I was about seven or eight, and played as myself, not any sort of character, and the lack of customization didn’t give me anything to go off of when I didn’t want to copy May’s design for her.
In the end, the concept I ended up going for was based on the gap between me playing AS and me playing the other games. Ara was this cool, older character. She was sixteen to the other girls’ twelve (which seemed incredibly old and mature to 13-year-old me), she was this champion who had already completed her journey six years ago, and was experienced and strong. The other two had very realistic color palettes, and I wanted Ara to stand out, so she ended up with purple hair and bright blue eyes. I’m pretty sure I also had reasoning like “Ruby = red and Sapphire = blue, so Ruby + Sapphire = purple, but since she’s an Alpha Sapphire character, the blue eyes tie her more strongly back to sapphire” or something.
I thought the best way to communicate a character who’s cool and athletic was spiky bangs and a ponytail. Because she spends her free time exploring the Hoenn region and all its water, she wears shorts over a one-piece swimsuit (because I personally have always disliked bikinis, especially for characters who actually swim) and water shoes. Looking back, her original design is a bit boring, mostly because I wasn’t used to complicated character designs at that point. It doesn’t really matter to me anymore, though, because when I think about Ara now, it’s usually either when she’s in Hisui or post-Hisui when she’s wearing different clothes.
If I had designed Ara today, she probably would have had black hair and would resemble Norman more than her mother. I probably would have used more blue than purple for her and went over the top with the swimmer and trainer aesthetic.
I’ve been wanting to draw her lately but had difficulty translating her into my newer style. It’s been a while since I drew her, and because her features were originally so inconsistent (Like, the shape of her eyes changes between two drawings at the same angle right next to each other), maybe it’s time for a redesign.
Also, I don’t know why her name is Ara. I just came up with it one day while trying to design her and rolled with it. This makes her unusual, because I usually spend at least several minutes combing through baby naming sites before naming my ocs. Technically not a “fake” name as it has a few usages across different languages, but I thought it was original when I came up with it. I don’t have the strength in me to retcon and claim that it’s short for Arabella or something similar. Her name is just Ara, not matter how badly my autocorrect wants it to be Zara
