also lots of bits in Zexal remind me of stuff from the original series; the Tetsuo vs Yuma duel reminds me of the Jonouchi vs Yugi duel in battle city, Kaito reminds me of Kaiba especially because of Haruto (though he seems simultaneously better than Kaiba as a person but worse for consequences), Shark seems to also have a bit of Jonouchi since he has a sister in the hospital, the new antagonist they introduced remind me of Pegasus since he's laughing at American cartoons, heartland's setup reminds me of battle city, and of course the obvious astral atem parallels
