Introducing Orcaheart! My chubby orca boy. 15 moons old and tries too hard. Someone save him.
Hello, one of the neighborhood brats decided it would be funny to pour a ton of face lotion inside my betta tank. I got home and found the water cloudy and my betta barely hanging onto life. I quickly set up a hospital tank with warm water and placed him in there. He's swimming around more and looks okay but I'm so terrified that he will die. What else should I do? I can't believe someone would do this.
Oh, my god, that’s horrible, but not terribly unheard of... Awhile ago, someone had a child pour perfume into their betta tanks.
Aside from giving him 100% new conditioned water, there isn’t a whole lot you can do than the basics. Just do what you can with the hospital tank to reduce stress as much as possible to keep him good and strong as well. For example, make sure it’s at the ideal temperature (around 80) and have plenty of hiding places. If the hospital tank is around 1 gallon, you’ll need to change the water daily to prevent the buildup of ammonia.
I really hope the best for you and the fish.
What do you think about the "baby bettas" at Petco? Are fry harder to take care of? Cons of fry?
I think that it is a real shame that Petco has decided to sell betta fish even younger and without offering any sort of proper care information. It's obviously a money grab- a way to sell an even amount of males/females without having to cull "ugly" fish that won't sell or losing a lot of females because most people do not buy them. People will buy them because 'awww how cute a baby'.
Pros of fry; you get to watch your own baby grow up and turn into a mystery fish which is kind of fun. They are cute.
cons;you don't get to pick the looks/fins/gender of your fishthey can be more fragile in general at that stage of life
Differing care- younger bettas need warmer water (I think 82F is more ideal) and a food focused for fry is better for them. Growing animals need more nutrients in general. A high quality betta pellet like Omega One would be okay (you'd have to crumble it a bit to allow their smaller mouths to eat it) but feeding live/frozen, a fry designed food, or best yet a homemade gel food is going to be the best thing you can do for the fry. They are also small so you should either have an extremely well baffled filter or (best for all fish fry typically) a sponge filter.
My general stance on all corporate pet store fish is "if you love it and the individual store treats them right, there's no problem buying it" so if you really want a cute little betta fry, go for it, just do a little general 'how to raise betta fry' research. I mean, they are probably only weeks younger than the others they sell. And if you DO go that route, we all love to see growth pictures (:
