It presented us with many challenges above and below the surface and all in the midst of a global pandemic. We were strapped for time and restricted by weather but our team were fantastic and Megan even managed to do some filming In-between dives. Along with the help of some very talented friends and storytellers they made a short film about the importance of a quiet ocean! Credit © 🎬 ✅Michael Bigg, @exploreorg, @orcalabbc 🖋 Yesterday morning we found the A5’s just off the main rubbing beaches. They popped into Strider for a brief rub. See here A109 from the A23’s and A61 from the A25’s. Both quite recognisable individuals. A61 due not only to his sheer size but also the really cool hook at the top of his dorsal. A109 suffered a terrible injury likely due to a collision with a boat in 2017. You can see the healed scaring just behind her dorsal. So glad to see a full recovery and another reminder of the threats boat pose in the habitats of whales. All footage from inside the Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological reserve had been captured remotely back at the lab by cameras under permit. Credit © 🎬 ✅ @wild_sky-productions Megan Hockin-Bennett Here is a beautiful moment with A99, the great granddaughter of A2, also known as Nicola who was one of the first individuals Paul began to identify in the 1970’s, when he first came to this area to study whales. 50 years on Paul still frequently talks fondly of stories of her in those early years. Over the years Nicola along with her daughter, A30 have both been especially cherished matriarchs of the northern residents to many people familiar with this area. After Tsitika’s (A30) passing in 2013 she left behind her two daughters, A50 and A54 as they were beginning to grow their own families. Although for years after her passing we continued to refer to these two matrilines as the A30’s in the past two years they have been spending more time apart as their families continue to grow. Orcalab now faces the hefty task of collecting as many separate recordings of the A50’s and A54’s in order to begin to learn to tell them apart acoustically. I guess that’s the beauty of staying In the same place for 50 years. The generational knowledge we have been able to collect on these whales is vast and rich. Long may it continue! Credit © 🎬 ✅ @orcalabbc ✏ Steller Sea Lions: Every year, around this time, our resident population of Steller Sea Lions begin to haul themselves out onto the rocks just south of the lab. Here are a few introductory facts about the lives of these salty sea pups! During the summer months they spend their time at rookeries further up the coast of British Columbia, where they give birth and nurse their pups until the fall when they move south to prey on migrating fishes, including salmon. On average, they dive to 30 meters to feed, however one was recorded at a whopping 250 meters deep. Males are just over three times the weight of females and can weigh up to one tonne. Sadly, Steller Sea Lions along with other species of pinnipeds along this coast have recently been threatened by a proposed cull. Some people think that the rise in population is causing the decline in salmon populations. Yet, there has been very little evidence of this. In fact, salmonids have been recorded to only make up 10% of a Steller Sea Lion's diet. Being generalists, Steller Sea Lions feed on over 50 species of fishes and invertebrates, included Great Pacific Octopus! Interestingly enough, the cull has been closely linked to potential fur trade markets with the interest of China. We hope that in continuing to learn from and document this species on their winter haulout that we can help stop this unnecessary proposal from escalating further without adequate research. In partnership with explore.org, we have set up a camera up at the haulout site visible from the lab, so we can capture scenes just like this one all winter long. Browsing through #orcalab account. A beautiful post from 2018 Credit © 🎬 ✅. @orcalabbc ✒ The first visit to the Rubbing Beach of 2018 is a fact! Word was spreading that whales were in the area and this afternoon we began to hear the familiar calls of the A23s and A25s and the A30s. But there was a surprise of A4 calls as well. We spent the next few hours tracking the orcas through Blackney Pass and into Johnstone Strait. Where the A23s, A25s and A4s went in for a rub at the Main beach. What a Canada Day! 🐳🇨🇦🐬 Also welcome to Luke, Ben & Amelie! Ellie was happy to see company after being charge of the Lab pretty much by herself for nearly 3 weeks.
