Word was spreading that whales were in the area and this afternoon we began to hear the familiar calls of the A23s and A25s and the A30s. But there was a surprise of A4 calls as well. We spent the next few hours tracking the orcas through Blackney Pass and into Johnstone Strait. Where the A23s, A25s and A4s went in for a rub at the Main beach. What a Canada Day! 🐳🇨🇦🐬 Also welcome to Luke, Ben & Amelie! Ellie was happy to see company after being charge of the Lab pretty much by herself for nearly 3 weeks. Post and caption by @orcalabbc With the return of the Humpback whale to this area we are continuously seeing new and exciting things. One of the most special is a unique feeding technique called bubble net feeding. The Humpback makes a call in which the frequency vibrates the swim bladder of fish making them group together creating a bait ball. The whale then blows a ring of bubbles around the fish trapping them inside. Once the fish are nicely incased the whale rises up through the ring of bubbles to the surface with his mouth wide open engulfing all the fish as it goes. This feeding technique is seen more commonly on the north central coast of BC and Alaska and sometimes with groups of up to 16 humpback working together. In this area Lucky is the first whale to be seen displaying this behaviour and only seen doing it solo. A few days ago we were lucky enough to have her travel very close past the lab deck and in the shallow water off the rocks began displaying this unique feeding technique. We all stood in awe as it's something we have heard accounts of all summer but never seen. Jedi the dog also seemed quite interested in what was going on, but Paul managed to reassure him that Lucky was 'Totally cool' Thanks to the land based observation of Orcalab we were able to witness one of natures great events without interfering with this whales life in any way and that is such a spectacular feeling.
