Present Future Retroactive: Vol. 6
The internet is a vast and wonderful place, and sometimes we’ve let freshly-minted singles cool off over time. However, in this economy of speed and scale, it doesn’t make their music any less worthy. In short, a great record is a great record. Besides who doesn’t love to reminiscence of better times? Ah, the nostalgia! Covering the freshly-minted and its relative like, we revisit some of our favorites, and among them you might recognize a few familiar faces.
For our latest installment of Present Future Retroactive, At Cost Magazine revisits some of our favorite electronic cuts we've seen over the months.
Artem Xio
Moscow’s self-professed vinyl junkie Artyom “Xio” Malev is a curator of independent label SubUrbz and Wax Ninja, whose music has rubbed shoulders from some of Russia's industry giants including Cream Soda, whom have offered their remixing skills to Xio's track "Now U Know". With his latest track "Pressure", Xio recalls some of his old favorites, with the squeaky shuffle of his New York garage, styled after some of the genre's greats Kerri Chandler and Grant Nelson. A sprawling house track of generous length, the track chatters over rattling hi-hats and the rubbery rasp of its full-bodied synths.

Disziplin
A thrilling techno-infused gallop, "Six" is the second track from Disziplin's upcoming album. Fronted by EIMIC’s Max Fedorov, the track with its sustaining, Balearic-influenced textures floats across its limitless expanse; a track which Fedorov terms as "some road trip feeling".

Flõstate
Comprised of producer Michael Le (MKSTN) and songwriter Avery Florence, Canadian duo Flõstate conjure alchemic concoctions of electronic sound through otherwise discrepant textures. Witnessed through the jumbled wind chimes and break beats of breezy R&B single "Home Ground" or the resounding stillness of "Time", Flõstate exists the wonderous form of their ethereal being.

giek_1
Dark, brooding electronica via The Netherland's Stephanie Smit, "A New Existence" is a snapshot from Giek_1's left-field production. Juxtaposing the flowing and ambient to the mash of digitized distortion, Giek_1's concerns themes of duality and divinity, finding the balance between the self and the other.

ORCHA
The personification of Australia's Matt Sheers, the Melbourne producer blends his talents as a violinist and beatmaker, becoming one as ORCHA. Through his most recent album, we see ORCHA's talents reflected in the dusky, lounge and breathiness converging in the orchestral grandeur of "Euphoria" and on the LP's title track "Reflections", we see the fluvial meander of its stringed lush intersect with the kick of its inching percussion.

Rone & Georgia
Breathing new life into his previous single "Gingko Biloba", the French producer recruits British singer Georgia in a dazzling rendition of the lead single from his latest album "Room with a View". Feigning with its swooning vocal presence, the gentle vulnerability of Georgia's delicate touch is emphasized over the enigmatic sweep of bassy textures and glistening electronic chimes. Reimagined under a new title, you can check out "Waves of Devotion" below.

Sasha Rome x HYPERDAZE
Previously performing under the name Mir, Sasha Rome is certainly a change in direction for producer Dan Sokolov. The musician whose curriculum vitae includes membership as the guitarist and vocalist for rock group “The Lost Cosmonauts, hones in on his newfound craft merging hip-hop-driven percussion to electronic dance textures. His latest track "Meridian", a collaboration with HYPERDAZE reverberates to fuzzy synths and discordant harmonies of choppy serenity, as the track climactically builds towards its cosmic apex.

ORCHA - Atlas
The latest offering from Australia’s ORCHA, Melbourne-based violinist Matt Sheers touts “ATLAS” as his most textural single to date. An electronic track, flush with curious quirk through weaving synth textures, the single wobbles through its daze of digitized psychedelica. Deep and resonant in its drifting reverb, the fluctuations of his latest single refract over the crystalline sound of a frosted vocal and the expanse of its infinite air. Speaking about the track and its relevance to the zeitgeist, ORCHA had this to say
“’ATLAS’ is a song about feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, a heavy feeling that you can’t shake no matter how hard you try. I was rushing around 24/7, no time to rest or recoup, and always burning myself out. One day at the studio I just sat down and asked myself why I was doing that to myself every day; then ‘ATLAS’ just kind of poured out of me in a few recording sessions. I think my subconscious was telling me to slow down, and maybe even wrote the song on my behalf.”
“The song is a little reminder to myself to take things slower, give myself time to manage my health and energy levels and to remain strong even when my mental health isn’t as good as it could be. I really explored using lots of affected violin sounds in this track: all the synths and melodies are violins that have been altered in one way or another, mostly using Ableton plug-ins and my Helix LT audio effects pedal and was excited that I could emulate the dreamy 80s synth-pop sounds that inspired the track. This is the next single off my upcoming album, there’s so much more cooking away right now and I can’t wait to release them into the world!”
You can catch “ATLAS” alongside the penetrative percolation behind “Depths” and the wonky curiosity that is the dream-laden track “Reverie”:
