Snake is staring at her like he's seen an alien. Everyone has something they're keeping to themselves, after all, especially in this business. He still doesn't trust her as far as he can throw her (which may be a considerable distance) but he's not so callous as to not say something.

Really he was more concerned with the whole 'dick' issue.

"You aren't making any sense. Did you get bit by one of those spiders? I don't remember there being any psychoactive plants here..."

His filthy fingernails scratch at the back of his neck, pulling some kind of leaf from the fluff of his hair.

"Have some water. I boiled it earlier so it should be okay to drink."

It still tasted like swamp water, but there was only so much he could do given his lack of supplies. Trying to drink straight from the source was probably going to get him a face covered in leeches.

Rain cleans, washes away all that's transpired. Droplets the size of quarters pelt and cling to each part of him -- sliding down his length to puddle at his boots like small rivers branching off to meet once more. Warmth combined in them from the humidity to kiss the apples of his cheeks like a lost lover. Caution a master to his every move traversing the soot covered stains of the bombshell fragments still smoldering in their respective craters. Each divot a testament to the violence not nearly more than a few hours prior to his arrival at the center of Hanoi's once crowded streets turned a silent morgue.

There was no telling what had awaited him despite this, how each step gained could have been another setback in his current unknown location, fitting camo to match the muted colors of torn down buildings left in disarray. Doors left to mere splinters, that seemed to melt, or slant based on their position in proximity to gunfire. It was a wonder how any could hide in rubble let alone a warzone pending on the brink of another fire fight. Yet, all the local reports he received mentioned a foreign woman, blond of hair and medium height only ever sighted some weeks past in contrast to the current situation. More than any information before when he was trying to find her on her on his own terms.

In his memory, her smile is but a wistful goodbye reaching the crinkles of bright blues half lidded cuddled by the curve of dark lashes. Seemingly lovingly enraptured by his mere existence at measure of him that, at one point, fluttered the beating of his heart. All distorted recollections near distracting from the gun now whipping out of the doorway he's closest to nearly pressing against his head. Like instinct, reflexes jolt to capture the hand that hold the weapon, tussling with its user into the building attached, coming to twist the assailant around into a choke hold. Firm in his grasp come the rasping of dulcet notes in English, a promise of something more. Realization, then a release of his captured foe returning to face him.

"Think you can wait out the war?" he manages, heavy brawn rising and falling with intakes of breath from the effort of their dance. Adrenalin pumping through veins with clarity to his remaining eye in the dim lighted house they'd stumbled into. He took the length of her in -- whatever words he'd imagined he'd say to her evaporated with the indignation escaping the usually poised aloof nature of her features. She had changed.

"Why Hanoi?", the words like gravel rattling in his throat to a near close. A voice strained on the possibility that this was where she wanted to be. What agencies ideals would she uphold this time.

Even now, in the branches above, a small green snake disguises itself easily among the vines. Not her Snake, though.

Jack is more than likely still unconscious. The rest he gets in that cell will be the only rest he'll have to survive on.

Luckily, this isn't just a sightseeing tour, and her beautiful horse can easily carry two women as well as he carries one. In fact, this is the first time in a long time since she's actually felt herself not frowning. Not smiling, exactly, but hardly as severe as she is with Volgin. He's a monster, but she's seen a thousand like him - a man so egotistical he can't bear the idea of being slighted without flying into a violent rage.

Her hand rests on the horse's mane, for a long, quiet moment. So still and so quiet it's like she's part of it.

"... The End trained me in sniping when I was younger. We'd spend days in places like this, barely moving, not sleeping, not eating."

Joy hums over the memory, like it's a warm and happy one.

"No one in the world can disappear into the trees like he can. He can see through the leaves themselves, like each one is an eye."

She looks distant. She's looked distant for a while. Her other hand rests on Eva's, bringing her closer against her on her horse.

"Hold on. We're going to have to move quickly. Remember this place. It will be your way out."

Snake is a physical man. He can't sit there just talking, he has to --- do something, to siphon some of the aggression away so he can focus.

He settles for poking the ice in his drink with a cocktail stirrer. They're in a shitty little bar on the way to Hell. There's even a little deviless on the red neon sign winking prettily at passersby.

What's done is done. Nothing he does, or ever will do, can change it. His own flesh and blood roams the Earth and it doesn't bode well for anyone. Ocelot had been the one to tell him that, after nine long years of non-existence. Ocelot, who patiently and quietly watched over not one but two sleeping giants - it was hard for Snake to understand, and his brain still felt like concrete.

Nine years. Nine years, and he still wanted to throw his drink in her face and take off again.

"You took my carcass to that hospital, huh? Adam had all these tapes... hours and hours of information. Zero's barely coherent. So much has changed ---"

He drinks whatever is left in his glass, and stares into it.

"... maybe he's paid off after all."

The Boss can't let herself watch Ocelot for another second without wanting to put his life at risk.

There are eccentricities she's willing to accept within the Cobra Unit because they are her friends. They're proven, reliable, and they listen to each other.

If acting like a fool is part of his diversionary plan, then he's got her convinced he's method acting. Then again, as long as Volgin is looking at Ocelot, he's not looking at her. Is that enough to let him off the hook?

It'll have to be.

"His plans are stupid because he's distracted."

Young love, or more adequately 'puppy love'. Jack and his new friend were chasing each other's tails in a circle while this - all of this espionage, all of this terrible weaponry, was sitting at the precipice of a second nuclear disaster.

"You said - Snake - stopped you from shooting him?"

Not that she wanted him dead. To the contrary, she desperately wanted him to live. Nobody else had to die here. Volgin, before he used that machine, her unit, and herself. It was the only way to avoid a large-scale nuclear catastrophe.

She was curious as to why Jack kept letting him go unscathed. He might have gotten roughed up, but it was like Jack was playing with him.

"Men think they're the center of everything going on around them."

Everyone else can wait, right?

"The upside is as long as they have their game, they won't be putting any pieces together."

She offered Eva a faint smile.

"Isn't that your cue?"
