He was so happy to read some erotica 😭
It's still so deeply embarrassing and shameful that the first person of colour to appear in a Midsomer episode wasn't until Series *7* - A background character, an Indian female writer in Sins of Commission whose name I think was Grace, though the actress isn't credited so it's harder to tell - , and the first *prominent* character of colour to appear wasn't until Series *8*, Jimmy Fong in Orchis Fatalis! And not to mention how stereotypical a lot of Jimmy's character was 😭
Can we get some appreciation for Jimmy's actor Sai-Kit Yung, who did his absolute best with what he had? 👏🏻👏🏻 He's actually one of the actors I'd love to see come back, to have sort of a redemption with a better-written character.
I love Sai-Kit Yung's guest performance in Orchis Fatalis ngl I am a little in love with him I think he carries that storyline beautifully.
With you on that. The rest though??
I am unbothered by the lack of diversity on early Midsomer.
Not losing any sleep.
Kind of into it even.
Yes, having more diversity is a great look for New Midsomer. And it wouldn't have hurt the old eps to have a more diverse cast. But there is something about the monolithic sameness of early Midsomer casting that makes sense for what the show was. Something so wholly in line with the story the early eps tell about this cozy fairytale place with its unhinged, inbred, bloody secrets. Something that speaks to me so much as someone who grew up in a lovely cozy village filled with a sameness I could never be part of.
I know what Brian True-May said and why he was fired. This isn't about that.
Diversity and representation matter. But there are ways in which a show can make a point. There are ways in which it can tell a story. Midsomer is not a place but an idea. It's about very specific ideals of home and community and about the rot within.
Does the casting for the early years serve that?
It absolutely does.
Thanks anon💋
whenever I see an orchid while shopping, I immediately think of Orchis Fatalis. then I snicker under my breath at the thought of Scott being shook about the cost of rare plants, and how people were murdered for the sake of a little yellow orchid ☠️
So you were thinking this was an unhealthy obsession with orchids?
You may have never met these people:
“Of course you were.”
Midsomer Murders, Season 8 - Dead in the Water & Orchis Fatalis
Scott: "I was thinking of the knickers, sir."
Barnaby: "Of course you were."
Harriet Walter as Margaret Winstanley
Midsomer Murders: Orchis Fatalis (Season 8, Episode 3)
