Voilà! The #LaughingCow, who while not specifically internet famous, was the first branded cheese product ever registered in France. She's been around since 1865. Still looking well. Here she is in her second reincarnation, a drawing by #benjaminrabier. #spon #notreally #heyfromageriesbelhowaboutanendorsementdeal 🐏 #etuotw #eventoedungulate #orderartiodactyla
Week 4: Beef that is more internet famous than this blog will ever be. This is Texas Tornado, or #fluffycow, as you might know him. But he's not a cow. He's a bull. A fancy one whose semen you can buy from any number of websites for around $30 per unit. I don't know if that's good value. Pops? Texas Tornado is a #clubcalf which is basically, as far as I can gather, a show breed made up of other actual cattle breeds. I don't know what those other breeds are but I know they must have long hair because that's how TT got so floof. His people put him through a rigorous hair dressing routine that makes him look like that. Much hairspray is involved. So much. #etuotw #eventoedungulate #orderartiodactyla
'Urban deer: Cute but a growing nuisance in Missoula' So what's the main problem; deer eating people's shrubberies, deer poop everywhere, deer being hit by cars, deer encouraging mountain lions to come out of the mountains so they can have some dinner? Possibly all of the above! Suggested solutions; darting them with birth control. This was dismissed as it would be expensive and apparently not a very long term solution. So for now it's still a problem but I think they're cute so all is well. 🐐 #etuotw #eventoedungulate #orderartiodactyla (at Missoula, Montana)
Week 4: well sorta, but hey it's time for some white-tailed deer! The odocoileus virginianus, as they're very formally know, are the most widely distributed wild ungulates in all the Americas. Not too surprising that I've found two on my lawn then is it?#odocoileusvirginianus #notfakedeer 🐐 #etuotw #eventoedungulate #orderartiodactyla (at Missoula, Montana)
Guess the famous white-tailed deer! It's Bambi, Walt Disney's Bambi. The original story was written by Felix Salten and that Bambi was a black forest roe deer. Was it classic case of 1940s racism or was he just cuter as a white-tailed deer? #isthatoktosay #dunnah 🐐 #etuotw #eventoedungulate #orderartiodactyla
... which brings us to the Procamelus, direct ancestor of all modern camels. Serious stuff. This even-toed ungulate was just beginning to have padded feet instead of hooves, and it had incisors. #gnash. Next week, Sinéad tells you about the deer on her front lawn, and I'll compare and contrast them to those on Michael D's. 🐏 #etuotw #eventoedungulate #orderartiodactyla
Week 3: Due to immense slacking on our part, week 3 is still going to be about ancient camelids. This is the Poebrotherium, a fairly boring sheep sized extinct camelid with teeth of no distinct function and none of the cool desert or alpine adaptations of its modern day cousins. The best thing about the Poebrotherium is that it used to fall prey to the incredibly named "terminator-pigs" which we will 100% be featuring later. 🐏 #etuotw #eventoedungulate #orderartiodactyla
