I'm Not There (2007, Todd Haynes)
12/08/2024
A film by Barbara Miller, Philip Delaquis, Manuel Bauer, in collaboration with Richard Gere and Oren Moverman.
A deeply intimate and unique documentary in which the 89-year-old Dalai Lama speaks directly to the camera, giving the audience the feeling of a private audience.
In addition, the film shows previously unpublished material from the archives of the Tibetan government and in this way tells us the story of the 14th Dalai Lama.
Four-part “Willie Nelson & Family” Documentary to Premiere Dec. 21 on Paramount+
- “He knows something nobody else knows,” Bobby Bare says in trailer
Love and music were the two gifts Mama and Daddy Nelson gave to their grandchildren, Bobbie and Willie Nelson.
And those gifts, “saved our lives,” Nelson says in the trailer for “Willie Nelson & Family.”
Directed by Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman, the four-part documentary tracks Nelson’s rise from Nashville, his tax problems that led to the IRS seizing nearly all he’d amassed and his re-establishment and current status as beloved elder statesman.
“He knows something nobody else knows,” Bobby Bare says. “It’s that magic that he carries around in his pocket.”
Constructed with archival photos and videos and featuring commentary from Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, Don Was, Bill Anderson, Shelby Lynne, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Sheryl Crow, Rosanne Cash, Ray Charles and others, the series premieres Dec. 21 on Paramount+.
In the trailer, Nelson says it best:
“Good music never goes out of fashion,” he says. “Like the sun, it rises every morning. Like the moon, it lights up the night. Like the seasons, it keeps changing.”

251 - Love and Mercy (with Taylor Cole!)
Are you loving our new original intro music, listeners? We're joined this week by its composer and our friend Taylor Cole to muse on the genre musical biopic with 2015's Love and Mercy. The film follows different chapters of Brian Wilson's life and mental wellness journey, with Paul Dano taking on Wilson's life as he experimented with The Beach Boys' sound and John Cusack as the later Wilson. After a debut at the 2014 TIFF, the film launched in the summer to positive reviews and a slew of precursor nominations for Dano. But much like the Academy voted with The Fablemans this past year, Dano was left out at the last moment.
This episode, we discuss how the film's structure appropriately tells Wilson's story while creatively twisting the standard biopic framework. We also discuss Elizabeth Banks' performance headlining the later portions of the film, divisive feelings about Dano's earlier performances, and 2015 Best Supporting Actor.
Topics also include Cusack strike tweeting, presenting Chicago to Social Studies class, and our relationships with the music of The Beach Boys.

These are two quiet, introverted people (if the love of jigsaw puzzles didn’t tip you off), and both actors know that they have to get serious drama without ever raising their voices. They pull it off beautifully, and if the whole movie were just the two of them chatting and solving jigsaw puzzles, that would probably be pretty great on its own.

Director - Jennifer Fox, Cinematography - Denis Lenoir & Ivan Strasburg
"I'm the hero of this story, NOT the victim. They fell apart, I didn't."
The film about John, which opens Friday, benefits from a living subject willing to bare all.
