Stenocereus pruinosis | Grey ghost organ pipe
Jardín de Cactus, Lanzarote, Islas Canarias, España
Stenocereus pruinosus is a columnar cactus from Mexico that I’ve found really impressive in both form and hardiness. It grows tall with multiple ribbed stems and short spines, and it produces nocturnal flowers that are white to pale pink, followed by fleshy fruits that attract birds and other wildlife. I’ve grown it in North Texas, and while it can benefit from protection during extreme winter weather, I’ve personally had it outside during freezing temperatures with no problems at all. Its striking, architectural shape and surprising cold tolerance make it one of my favorite cacti to grow in dry gardens or sunny spots where it can really show off.

I've been enjoying photographing the birds here in BC this winter, but I do miss Arizona sunsets! This one was at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.
