blatta orientalis // oriental cockroach
cockroach anon here!! so sorry about being too vague! i'm in northern missouri, we call them black roaches here but i'm pretty sure another name is oriental roach. also, i'm trying really hard not to hate them, i have autism and something touching me so unexpectedly like this roach did sends me into a meltdown. i know the little guy didn't mean it but i can't think about them without serious anxiety now so i'm trying to learn more for both mine and their sake
Yes sounds like the oriental cockroach! They’re sometimes called black beetles or black roaches or water bugs.
I’m afraid in the case of cockroaches I can’t do a whole lot to ease your mind, because they can be dangerous. Oriental roaches in particular love wet/damp places, and they can get into sewer pipes or garbage, which makes it easy for them to spread bacteria (E. coli, salmonella, etc.) around if they then get into your house. Luckily, though, they tend to stay in dark, damp/humid areas like basements and crawl spaces, or sometimes can be found around sinks, toilets, and washing machines if they’re searching out water. They eat decaying matter, both indoors and out, so decaying plant matter outdoors and sometime garbage or other food stores if they get inside.
However, unless you have an infestation, they’re not harmful to people. Seeing one or two here and there just happens, like with all other bugs. Keep your house clean and dry and you shouldn’t have a problem. If one crawls on you or you see one in the kitchen, just wash the area in case any bacteria was transferred.
Normally to get over a bug fear, I recommend people educate themselves as much as possible, but with cockroaches, and especially the cockroach species that are more likely to infest our houses (like the oriental roach), 95% of the information out there is coming from pest control companies and therefore is likely going to be negative and probably do more to scare you than anything. In this case I recommend researching other cockroach species as a way to start desensitizing yourself to the idea of roaches in general. Madagascar hissing roaches are a great place to start since people keep them as pets and they are pretty dang adorable! :)
@bandanalemon submitted: I found this lad in my bathroom, i live in Kansas, what is this lil guy?
Surprise! You have a cockroach friend. As far as I can tell, possibly an oriental cockroach? I’d need better photos to say for sure. I would suggest checking around to make sure it’s just this one who wandered inside, and you don’t have A Cockroach Problem. They like dark, damp places, but they’ll go anywhere to find food. Start by checking any potential food items that have been left out/open!
Found this guy at 2am in my bathroom in central ohio. Looked to be about 1.5-2 inches long but I wasn't wearing my glasses. Photos taken after catching and releasing. Who is he, and do i need to get my apartment fumigated lol
At first glance, it looks like a female Oriental Cockroach (Blatta Orientalis).
Especially as we're getting into spring (peak roach season). They tend to prefer cooler, humid areas (though are not exclusively found in them) and are about 1"–1.25" long. They're a pretty common pest, especially in the US, so I'd definitely recommend taking a look at some pest identification guides about them. They can have a pretty bad smell, so I'd at least check!
Here's a link to get you started.
