Hey all. I just realised that I came home after orientation, went straight to sleep, and then went straight to Lawrence's. I didn't get to tell everyone about it, so here.
For starters, I didn't sleep at all because at first I wasn't tired and then I didn't want to sleep through my alarm so I didn't sleep. I left the house at 7:30, put gas in the car, bought a red bull, and made my way to ODU.
It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, finding the correct car park, but I did. Breakfast was danishes and coffee with strangers. The guy next to me seemed very excited, and later I found out that he was from Maryland. There were two others at my breakfast table, but they only spoke to their moms.
After the welcome speech, they led the parents and guests out of the main room. The first thing they told us? To split into groups according to our majors (or lack there-of, in my case). I met up with all of the other undecided kids in the middle of the room. Once they set us up at three tables, they tell us that our first activity is to make a poster representing us as a group.
I felt like I was surrounded by nothing but preppy fucks, but I was wrong for the most part. It turns out that everyone else t my table was also from Virginia and we all had the same sarcastic sense of humor, save for two boys that didn't speak a word. Our poster consisted of a tissue paper Big Blue (our mascot, he's a lion with a big crown; a Monarch), flowers, and random squiggles made of pipe cleaners and marker. We feel like we did better than even the Arts and Letters majors, bur I guess we'll see in a few weeks who won.
We watched a presentation about our department, had to watch little presentations about campus safety, transporation, etc., and then we had lunch (Which was fucking excellent, by the way).
After lunch, we got to walk around the second floor of the Ted and mingle with the student clubs. It's safe to say that the most uncomfortable part of the day was all of the Christian clubs and sororities jumping at me as soon as I was in range of their table. The only tables I stopped at voluntarily were the Book Club, and the Filipino-American Student Association (joining, they were hilarious).
Finally, the biggest part of the day was here: choosing our classes. It took me two hours, but I got the classes that I wanted at times that weren't ridiculous.
MWF - World Religion and Beliefs, American Writers and Experiences
TR - Asia: Interpreting the Past, Algebra
The one class that I really wanted was music appreciation, but I guess I will just take it second semester.
I am so stoked for my first year of college. I am actually going to throw myself into my work. Hello, freedom of class choices.
