Dear Readers,
As we enter the holiday season, and we gain inspiration from remembering Nelson Mandela, I have a place for you to consider placing hard earned dollars for a greater good.
The YouthCare Orion Center, the Homeless Youth Basic Services & Shelter I began my time in Seattle working for, is a recent victim of shrinking public dollars. Their shelter provides 15 beds on weekdays, and 20 on weekends for young adults 18-25. It has been full since opening several years ago. It is an incredible place, mixing basic services with long-term help like job training. It helps get young adults on the right track before their lives become more permanently damaged.
Nearly 1 million in expected federal funding did not come through this year though. Local governments, already strained, have pledged enough to keep the shelter open next year for 5 days, around $250,000. YouthCare is looking to private donations for the remaining $100,000 to keep it open on the weekends.
If you'd like to give, here is an article about the problem, and a link to youthcare's fundraising page.
