The smile on David’s face is soft, warm. Normally haunted eyes are gentle as he gazes down at the small mutant in his arms. The little thing looks up at him with big, violet eyes. She gurgles happily, hands reaching upwards to David’s hand. Beneath his palm swirls a galaxy of lights, projected and created to entrance the child. To give her some sort of enrichment in this unfortunate life she’s been thrust into. Abandoned before she could even form a thought.
His smile falters, his thoughts going dark. There is anger swirling in his mind at the sheer senselessness of it. At the apathy in this mutant nation and their leaders who are too focused outwards to work on the problems within. To give these people more instruction than three vague laws.
A sharp cry pulls him from his thoughts and David’s gaze once again locks on the baby. Her face scrunches as she starts to wail. David grimaces. Yep, this little girl is an empath. The poor thing, picking up on his mood shifts. He quickly puts a smile back on his face and throws up some mental barriers. He even draws on a little-known power of his. The ability to influence emotions. He does it to himself, artificially pushing down his anger and bringing back that joy he felt when the baby smiled.
“Och, sorry sorry,” he says, voice soft as he starts walking about the Bower and bouncing his stride, giving the child some motion. “I’m not sad or angry. I’m happy now, see? So happy. Look at the dancin’ animals.” He waves a hand to create a procession of brightly coloured animals made of light that start prancing and dancing around his head.
