This Week in Oregon Girls HS Tennis (4/2)

Girls Match of the Week Sprague 4, Grant 4 Sprague took the defending PIL champs to the wire, claiming the 1st and 3rd doubles positions, as well as 1st & 3rd doubles and won the set tiebreaker. They followed it up with a dominant victory over another Portland HS stalwart, Lincoln HS to start their year 2-0. If the state wasn’t on notice before that they’re coming for the 6A state title, they know now.  Oregon Girls Tennis Top 10

Notable Performers(Girls Tennis) Sydney Board(10), Tigard Dating back to last season, the Tigers #1 singles standout has reeled off ten straight matches win, five of those have been this season where she’s yet to drop a set.  Ryan Lomber(9),Valley Catholic In three matches this year, the newcomer has given up a total of 5 games and helping her team match last season’s win total just 3 games into the season.  Laina Atiyeh (9), Stayton  Another freshman standout in the wide-open 4A division, who has made quite the impression in the early season, sporting a 3-1 record to start her career. Her lone loss? Valley Catholic’s Lomber.  Shana Denham (11) / Sophie Denham (12), Nelson The future is bright for Nelson in their first year as a 6A program. This first-doubles duo have started the year with 3 straight wins as the Hawks head towards conference play.  Kate DeVall / Megan DeVall (11), West Linn The DeVall duo’s hot start is anchored by a big win over Lake Oswego’s #1 doubles pair. If their early season results are any indication, they’re going to be ones to watch come districts time. Margaret Shively (12) Hillsboro Despite a loss to Mountainside standout Arushi Arora, HillHi’s #1 singles anchor led the state in wins (11) during last year’s shortened season and rolled into this year sporting a 3-0 record before her first loss.

This Week in Oregon Boys HS Tennis (4/2)

Spring break is over. We are several weeks into the season and the league schedules are heating up.   Boys Match of the Week  West Linn (2-1)(6A) 4 Central Catholic (2-1) (6A) 4 Central Catholic gave West Linn all they had, grinding out two 3-set victories at 1st and 3rd singles to score the tie, West Linn won overall thanks to the set tiebreaker (10-8) This non-conference contest must’ve been a barn burner to watch, and should pay dividends as the regular season schedule kicks off for both programs.  Oregon Boys Tennis Top 10

Notable Performers of the Week (Boys Tennis) Zach Moore (11) Cascade Moore is off to a 4-0 start on the year at No. 1 singles, and has given up just one game in his four matches. Dating back to last season’s abbreviated season, he’s 13-0 in his career thus far.  Gus Krauel(12) Central Catholic Grinded out a 3-set win(2-6, 6-3, 7-5) over West Linn’s Jaxson Ledwith on Friday to maintain an unbeaten record on the year so far(3-0) and establishing them both as players to watch in 6A singles title race later this year. Ryson Chiang(9) / Cameron Paulsen (11) West Linn This 1st doubles duo have been lights out to start the year(3-0) including a hard-fought win against Kadin & Kyle Freeman(4-6, 6-2, 6-1) of Lake Oswego.  Jake Anderson(10)/ Liam Rutherford (11) Stayton This pair have reeled off four straight wins to start their season — all straight set victories-- and will continue to be a linchpin in their team’s ability to compete for dual match wins throughout the year.
