At the school board meeting for the Osceola School District, a Black mother and teacher in the district called out the school board for their reckless policies. She began by laying out the alarming increase in COVID-19 cases, establishing the clear threat to students, staff, and their families. Osceola Schools are giving their students the options of whether they will do fully remote learning or attend the school in person. This might sound reasonable until you realize that the teachers do not get to make a choice. They must go to the school every day, filled with people in relatively close quarters. Even if everyone wears masks, as students and teachers breathe, cough, sneeze, laugh, etc., in the hallways, anyone with #COVID19 will leave microparticles in the air, which someone else will breathe in. The results will be catastrophic, creating a COVID hotspot. In this woman’s case, her son has asthma, making him more at risk if he gets the disease. She is not alone in her situation. All the teachers, unable to choose where they teach from, will have to either quit or risk becoming infected and infecting their at-risk family members. • The first day of school for #OsceolaSchoolDistrict is on August 24.
