Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Born: March 20, 1915 Cotton Plant, Arkansas, U.S. Died: October 9, 1973 (aged 58) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. Let us but forget this great pioneer of American Music that is not even spoken of in most Music History Courses; she's a famous gospel singer but also the mother of rock and roll. Your favorite classic rockers and stars from other classic genres loved her: Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, Meat Loaf, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Mahalia Jackson, Karen Carpenter, George Melly, Tina Turner and plenty more. She is a legend of legends and should be celebrated as such. Reposted from @pushing_black Today in Black History we celebrate Sister Rosetta Tharpe • One of the most celebrated musicians of all time, Sister Rosetta Tharpe enjoyed a celebrity in the 1940s rarely attained by gospel musicians before or since. "She could play a guitar like nobody else you've ever seen," her friend Roxie Moore said. "People would flock to see her. Everybody loved her." Ira Tucker Jr., the son of the legendary gospel singer Ira Tucker of the Dixie Hummingbirds, put it simply: "She was a rock star." • More than just popular, Tharpe was also groundbreaking, profoundly impacting American music history by pioneering the guitar technique that would eventually evolve into the rock and roll style played by Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Eric Clapton. However, despite her great popularity and influence on music history, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was first and foremost a gospel musician who shared her spirituality with all those who listened to her music. Her epitaph reads, "She would sing until you cried and then she would sing until you danced for joy. At the school board meeting for the Osceola School District, a Black mother and teacher in the district called out the school board for their reckless policies. She began by laying out the alarming increase in COVID-19 cases, establishing the clear threat to students, staff, and their families. Osceola Schools are giving their students the options of whether they will do fully remote learning or attend the school in person. This might sound reasonable until you realize that the teachers do not get to make a choice. They must go to the school every day, filled with people in relatively close quarters. Even if everyone wears masks, as students and teachers breathe, cough, sneeze, laugh, etc., in the hallways, anyone with #COVID19 will leave microparticles in the air, which someone else will breathe in. The results will be catastrophic, creating a COVID hotspot. In this woman’s case, her son has asthma, making him more at risk if he gets the disease. She is not alone in her situation. All the teachers, unable to choose where they teach from, will have to either quit or risk becoming infected and infecting their at-risk family members. • The first day of school for #OsceolaSchoolDistrict is on August 24.
