in 05x05 ("the disir"), there's the part when arthur, merlin, and mordred see osgar, and the trumpet part that plays right before osgar says, "sire," is almost the exact fucking same as the solo trumpet part that opens up mahler's fifth symphony.
and i just think that's fucking beautiful.
i obviously don't know if robert lane purposefully planned this (if he did, it's absolutely brilliant), but mahler's fifth symphony is broken up into three parts and five movements. movements i and ii are part i, movement iii is part ii, and movements iv and v are part iii.
part i, aka the one with the outstanding opening trumpet part, was written with inspiration about the shitty moments in his life. he had nearly died, he was mad at the world, and he just wanted to be able to do more.
and i think that lines up fantastically with this episode.
arthur's fate had been foretold for centuries but this episode shows that he seals his fate. this episode is the one where it becomes official that he is to die by mordred's hands. when he dies, it's likely that he just wants to go back, change everything he did to anger mordred, and to just do more to help everyone that he ever wronged.
i think that it's beautiful that him meeting osgar, him meeting the man that is literally holding his fate in his hands, and this opening trumpet part playing is beautifully horrible.
