People talk about how inserting memes and popular trends into fanfiction dates it and to an extent I think that's true to a certain extent, but I don't think the true killer is the things themselves so much as the author's obvious and fervent belief that these things will make the characters Cool™ and Hip™. A well-placed casual use of "yeet" has rarely murdered a paragraph, even in 2026, but every other character in the scene piling on to say "hahaha main character you are so funny/random/cool for saying the funny thing" sure as hell has.
