Oshiire 押し入れ
Oshiire (押し入れ) is a traditional Japanese closet, commonly found in washitsu (Japanese-style rooms) with tatami flooring. It is typically used for storing futon (bedding), clothing, and other household items. The design is simple and practical, emphasizing space-saving and functionality.
Characteristics of an Oshiire:
1. Sliding Doors: Oshiire closets usually feature sliding fusuma (opaque paper-covered doors) or shoji (paper and wood sliding doors). These doors save space compared to hinged doors.
2. Two Compartments: Inside, an oshiire is divided into two compartments:
- Upper Section: Used to store futons or lighter items.
- Lower Section: Generally used for heavier storage like blankets or seasonal items.
3. Deep and Wide: Oshiire are often quite deep and wide, allowing for bulky items like futons to be stored flat.
4. Adjustable Shelves: Some modern versions have adjustable shelves or extra storage spaces, but traditional oshiire usually have a single shelf in the middle.
5. Flexible Usage: Besides futon storage, the oshiire can also be used for clothing, small furniture, or household supplies, making it multifunctional.
The minimalistic design and efficient use of space are key elements that align with the Japanese philosophy of simple, clutter-free living.
Every day, we have to stow away the futon (the flat beds) into the 押し入れ (oshiire), which is the little closet in the back there. That way, the room is totally usable throughout the day. That futon is already folded into thirds and is ready to be put into the closet. The way you fold it is really easy to take out again, as you just have to pull out the bottom and it's ready.
