What happened in himym? I don't watch the show so I'm curious because everyone is posting about it

this is gonna be long, sorry

this is also all i’m going to say about the finale

essentially the show ended the way it was drafted to end 10 years ago (because that’s when the scenes were filmed with the actors that play ted’s teenage kids), which, due to the fact that characters tend to change and undergo personal development over the course of nine years, made no sense and retconned about a million plotlines and character development arcs.

the most egregious (to me), was that killing off the mother and ending it with ted’s kids encouraging him to ask out aunt robin just seems to me to be an insult to what the mother was supposed to represent to ted.  here’s a guy who’s gone on a travail of a journey to find his perfect woman, and the show spent episode after episode following ted and robin’s breakup in the second season illustrating why they didn’t work and why robin shouldn’t have been the mother (culminating in last week’s ep when ted told robin he didn’t love her anymore and finally letting her go), only to have ted come right back around to her at the very end.  what was the point of everything between the end of season 1 and now? 

much of this entire season was devoted to telling in flashforwards, of ted and the mother’s journey together.  they cast the wonderfully talented cristin milioti as the mother and she not only inhabited the role—she made die-hard fans fall in love with her and believe this was ted’s soulmate.  she had all these adorable quirks that aligned with ted’s oddities (that drove robin batshit, btw)

and you expect me to buy that ted’s wife may have been tracey (the mother), but the love of his life was always robin?  fuck you

this isn’t the first series finale i’ve seen where show writers completely absolve themselves of any sort of responsibility to the story they’ve been telling all along in favor of an ending that was ideal once upon a time, and i know it won’t be the last.  and i know that writers have a duty to write what they know and that they intuitively know these characters, and obviously i know that fans can overreact (please see your tumblr dash), but considering the blatant mismatch in storytelling that was rife in the finale and what seems to be a mass protest from fans and critics alike, i can only conclude that little green men abducted the writing staff, ghostwrote the finale and trolled the fuck out of all of us (wish fulfillment on my part: it was just that bad).  to allow a show to end the way it was slated to end nine years ago (when facing the uncertain potential of cancellation), when you’ve been granted all that time in-between cultivating relationships and defining personality traits, is irresponsible at best.

and it’s not like there’s anything we can really do about it (besides send incessant angry tweets, which would never resolve my disappointment); they’ve made their millions off of telling this roundabout tale, they’ve got another show coming out (which casual fans and new fans will probably watch the shit out of), and it all ends like this, abruptly and monumentally unsatisfying.
