Double bass, ca. 1580. Most likely made by Gaspar da Saló in Brescia, Italy. More rough in look that the contemporary instruments from Cremona, but usually with a richer sound. The pine used for the top is dated to 1536. Discovered in a convent in Padua in the mid 19th century, brought to Glasgow, then to London, and then to its current home, Oslo. The instrument is currently a part of the Dextra Musica foundation, whose prime activity is to loan fine instruments to fine musicians.
