Sachi had come into Hisagi’s office simply to ask a question about a form she had to fill out, but upon seeing the piles of paper around his desk she felt guilted into staying. It was the middle of the day, the sun hanging heavily in the sky. Already her fukutaichou looked so exhausted. He really worked too hard. What kind of division member was she if she didn’t do her part for him? The hot air was broken only by the occasional breeze that came in through the window and the two sweated in silence.
She tried not to smear the ink as she finished a page, passing it on to him to be signed. But he didn’t move to take it from her as he had been doing so mechanically earlier. Their paperwork assembly line halted.
"Um…?" She turned to see him leaning back in his chair, eyes closed in a much-needed sleep. Cautiously, she reached out to tap his shoulder. “Hisagi-sam— Er, Hisagi-san?" As soon as she touched him, he slumped sideways. His head came to rest on her shoulder. She stiffened. “Hisagi-sama!"
A strawberry pink tint crept up her cheeks and she tried not to stare. Should I wake him? But Hisagi-sama needs his rest! But the work needs to be finished… The debate went in circles in her mind as he slept away by her side. There was no way she could pick him up and carry him. But…if she moved carefully she could still write without waking him.
Her heart nearly thudded out of her chest as she sat and finished the reports for him.
