"I am going to fuck the swan tonight." As you all know, Oswald Mosley was a real person and a real fascist leader of the very real British Union of Fascists in 1932 - not 1929 just like in the show. Mosley wasn't a fascist from the beginning of his polítical career (which he started right after WWI): he switched between Conservatives, Independent Party, Labour party and the so called New party before founding the British Union of Fascists. He started without experience and was mainly voted because of his inherited baronetcy. He fell out with the Conservatives over Irish Policy - since he condemned the operations of the Black and Tans in Ireland against civilians. With growing popularity in Birmingham and whole England, he became a household name in fascist's circles. He met Benito Mussolini in 1931, and came back to England as an e en more convinced fascist. Mosley married his mistress Diana Guinness in secret in Germany on 6 October 1936 in the Berlin home of Germany's Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda Joseph Goebbels. Adolf Hitler was their guest of honour. The riot played out in the show was inspired by a real fight: The Yiddishers were a London street gang based in Whitechapel and were led by Alfie Solomon (for real). During the 1930s, they opposed the growing fascist movement in Great Britain and participated in an attack on members of the British Union of Fascists, later known as the Battle of Cable Street on 4 October 1936. Mosley had multiple affairs, which is also a little detail revealed in the show.
