The snowball landed on the back of Danny’s jacket with a wet thunk as he walked away from the school. He sighed and turned, expecting to see a student fleeing the scene but instead found Clara, cheeks and nose pink with the cold and eyes sparkling as she grinned at him.

“Oh, you’re in for it now,” he said, smile stealing over his face.

“You’re on.”

Clara dipped quickly and scooped up a handful of snow. She was still compacting it when Danny threw his first projectile. It burst against Clara’s shoulder, sending snow into her face and she laughed, retaliating immediately with a throw that went wide.

They traded snowballs, circling closer to each other in the school courtyard. Danny was trying to scoop another handful of snow when Clara barreled into him, knocking him onto his back with her on top of him, both of them breathless from laughter.

“I win,” she said, smiling down at him.

“If you insist,” he said. “To the victor go the spoils, so what can I do for you?”

“I think a kiss would do nicely,” Clara replied. She leaned down, closing the small distance between their lips and claiming her victory.

Actually, re: series 8, I think the one thing they did wrong was Oswink. What do you think they were going for with that? Because it does seem like she's more interested in the idea of a grand romance than Danny as a person. Amy/Rory had a clear dynamic: Rory was the rock Amy needed, Amy was the push Rory needed. But Oswink seemed a bit purposeless; the only time I've disliked Clara is in Danny scenes. Was that the whole point, or were they going for high romance again and just missed it?

I mean, partially I think you’re picking up on aspects that are part of what they were going for. From “Because I love him!” to “Those words from me are yours now...”, Clara gets caught up in the idea of a grand romantic love story, maybe more than she actually makes an effort to really make this relationship work. And she knows it, too, by the end. “I wasn’t very good at it, but I did love you.” Not that Danny is really all that better at love.

That said, we are talking about one of my favourite romance on Doctor Who here. It’s difficult, it’s flawed, its awkward and real, it tries to be kind and sometimes it can’t help but be cruel.
