Bianca’s Dress

Like the dress I posted last week, this is for the Robinson Shakespeare Company, a school acting company out of South Bend, Indiana whose costumes are being made by my friend Chantelle the Dressmaker. Like last time, this dress manages to convey something of the spirit of the 1920s without actually being as hideous as the typical 1920s dress. That was a short tube with a wide belt at the hips which pretty much flatters nobody. Here the inverted V seam which attaches the skirt to the bodice draws attention to the hips without thickening the silhouette the way that a belt at the hips would do.

Bianca is a kind of bad-girl role, so the sparking pinkish red is just right for her as is the draped neckline. Again, this is a sheer knit to be worn with a matching slip, so that the actress can pull it on and off easily. Notice the little rosettes added at the shoulders, a flirty touch. These are easy to make if you take a length of narrow fabric, fold it in half, create a tube, then run a basting thread along the seamed edge. You pull the thread and also curl the fabric around itself, then tack the resulting petals as you like.
