Otherkin resources, terms, deffinitions and discussion on gender
Otherkin is not, and will never be, an oppressed group.
Please stop conflaiting otherkin with actual oppressed groups, with social justice in general and/or involving us in identity politics.
People who make fun of otherkin are not “invalidating” our identites, because while otherkin is a personal identity label, it is not an identity like, say, being Trans or gay or whathaveyou are.
While I’m sure people in the community appreciate you trying to stick up for us, often times you do so in a way that is appropriative of other groups, or tries to make otherkin look like a valid oppressed group, when we are not.
Otherkin has nothing to do with being Trans and we DO NOT fall under the Trans label strictly for being otherkin, if you see someone implying this call them out.
The otherkin tag often gets a number of posts by trolls stating that they are transmeatpizza or something ridiculous as such, Most likely they are trolls and should be ignored.
However, the recent trend of “Tucutes” and neopronouns/genders DOES need to be addressed;
Otherkin is not and never will be a gender. Nounself pronouns/neopronouns are harmful to actual trans people and make it legitimately harder for us to be taken seriously and get the help we need.
Void/fae/Bun/magi/nano/plant/cat/whatever are NOT GENDERS. This is not how gender OR pronouns work
http://www.grammarbook.com/grammar/pronoun.asp
a. A grammatical category used in the classification of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and, in some languages, verbs that may be arbitrary or based on characteristics such as sex or animacy and that determines agreementwith or selection of modifiers, referents, or grammatical forms.
b. One category of such a set.
c. The classification of a word or grammatical form in such a category.
d. The distinguishing form or forms used.
2. Sexual identity, especially in relation to society or culture.
a. The condition of being female or male; sex.
b. Females or males considered as a group: expressions used by one gender.
Gender and otherkin ARE NOT inherently linked. For example being angelkin does not make ones gender “angel”
These “neogenders” are just as harmful as nounself pronouns ( as they usually go hand in hand) and most of them are essentially gendefluid, Agender, or Cis and gender nonconforming ( or make zero sense at all)
Please stop appropriating trans struggles as some cute accessory you can add to your list of ‘identities’ on your tumblr page.
If you are complaining about a lack of nonbinary pronouns-theres an entire list here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-specific_and_gender-neutral_pronouns#Summary you do not need to make the Trans community look like fools by using nounself pronouns.
Now, that being said, there ARE otherkin who are also Trans and sometimes said people do like to talk about their personal experiences with both, HOWEVER their personal experiences obviously do not apply across the board.
Otherkin with mental illness exist, that does not mean they are otherkin because they are ill, and unless you happen to be that persons doctor, do not attempt to diagnose them.
POC otherkin exist, we are not all bored, rich white kids.
Impoverished otherkin also exist.
Please do not get your only sources of information on otherkin from internet trolls, Encyclopedia Dramatica, the gawker article or what have you, I have linked to a few resources you can learn about further down this post.
OTHERKIN TERMS AND DEFFINITION:
Otherkin are people who in some way or another feel as though they are nonhuman, typically this is a personal, spiritual belief, that may involve the belief that they have a nonhuman soul that was accidentally placed into a human body, or that they had a nonhuman past life that they still feel strongly connected to, enough to still identify with it.
Others believe it is entirely psychological, possibly odd brain development, a coping mechanism, related to trauma or mental illness, or a strong connection with the archetype/symbolism of a particular creature, enough to identify with that more than humans.
Despite these beliefs otherkin are well aware that they are physically human and live in a human society, and this must attempt to the best of our abilities to function as human.

Friendly reminder that religious/spiritual beliefs =/= mental illness.
You can be religious and mentally ill, and you can also be non-religious and mentally ill.
Religion and spirituality can certainly overlap with mental illness, and if taken far enough, some beliefs could indeed make one mentally ill, but there is no magic button or on/off switch that makes you mentally ill the second you believe in something, or stop believing in something.
Just throwing that out there.
Much like any community of course, you get your bad seeds, people using their otherkinness to excuse bad or harmful behavior, or a use or manipulate people. We try to keep everyone aware of these types of people and how to avoid them (its harder on Tumblr than it is on our own specific sites where we can ban someone doing those things )
Otherkin also have roots in a group from the 70’s called the Silver Elves, and first appeared online in the early 90’s back in old usenet groups.
Typically otherkin specifically refers to people that ID with or as mythical type creatures like elves, fae, demons ect but can be used as an umbrella term for all nonhuman identifying people.
The Therianthropy community developed seperatley from the otherkin community and encompasses people who ID as/with earthly animals that do or have at one point existed on this planet (wolves, bears, dinosaurs, ect )
There is a middle group, mythical types that feel more comfortable within the therian community and whose types tend to be more beast like (some dragons, unicorns, griffins ect) who are being called Theriomythics, though the term is still not widespread amoung the English speaking communities.
