Be careful when handling the Japanese Otton frog [Babina subaspera]. They may be cute, but they’re carrying hidden weapons. These frogs have evolved spiked pseudothumbs which are hidden under two flaps of skin. Although both sexes possess these pseudothumbs, only the males have been observed using them, mainly for battling one another for access to females. This adaptation has earned them the nickname “Wolverine frogs”. Images by N. Iwai.

Here we see an Otton frog [Babina subaspera], a large species endemic to the Amamioshima and Kakeromajima Islands in Japan. These frogs are an endangered species. In the past, they were collected as a food source. Today they are threatened by predation from invasive mongooses, which were introduced to Okinawa Island in 1910 in an attempt to control the population of native venomous snakes, which went about as well as you’d expect. This japanese fighting frog, also known as the otton frog (Babina subaspera) may look innocent, but he’s hiding retractable claws that earned his species the nickname wolverine frog. They are also known for having five fingers!  ©2005 Timothy Johnson
