"Eat to live and live to eat - for health, for enjoyment and for indulgence" - is what our Singaporean host Yvette thinks.
It was a Saturday afternoon when we went to Yvette's house for a meal. From the doorstep to the end of the meal, she was really friendly and enthusiastic! Her house is beautifully furnished and the interior design gives off a warm yet modern feel. Her cooking is delicious and healthy.
"I studied food science in the university," she shares heartedly. "I've learnt about the various preservatives that can be found in food, so I'm particularly picky about my ingredients."
The happy couple spends most of their weekends at home, taking a breather from the hectic pace of their work. They invite family and friends over for meals wherever possible. When asked about what variety of cuisines do they cook, they have more to share.
"She doesn't just cook chinese food," her husband, Jun Jie points at the dishes. "She's good with western food and her pasta is delicious!"
That Saturday, the couple prepared soup, a local dish and a famous Singaporean cold dessert.
"Corn and carrot soup is especially nutritious to the body," Yvonne explains as she scoops a generous portion of soup for us to taste. "And this," she points to the pieces of pork in the broth, "is to enhance the flavour of the soup. It's pretty tasty like this."
Apart from her healthy corn and carrot soup, we were lucky to have a local dish called Yong Tau Foo and a famous Singaporean dessert called Cheng Teng. Yong Tau Foo is a Hakka Chinese soup dish commonly found in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Cheng Teng is a well-known cold dessert that can be found in hawker centres and it is made up of dried longan, dried dates, barley, sago, white fungus, pandan leaves, lotus seeds, ginko nuts, dried persimmon and pang da hai.
Yvette is a wonderful host and she was very polite. She has much to share about her profession and her knowledge on food.
"While I can't guarantee that I can cook the best in Singapore, but I can assure that I can expose you to Singapore's vibrant culture."
