How is the princesses thing based off stereotypes and erasure?
Hoo boy. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere we go.
Let's start with the "racebending" of characters like Esmeralda. She's a member of a group Hugo never identified beyond g*psy, but presumably Roma or a similar group. There's only one of her in the whole canon of children's entertainment. One. An indigenous-nomadic woman, probably Roma, who is a heroine. And she was removed wholesale from this set. Likewise for Tiana (there are African-tribal bends, but no bend for Western black women), Merida (indigenous-Scottish--although she is white, her identity is extremely distinct, and very underrepresented in media), and Jasmine (although bent!Belle is identified as Arab, she's a stereotype in an incorrectly-wrapped hijab).
Next, erasure-combined-with-stereotypes! There is no "what would it look like if Mulan had been Roma, and Esmeralda Chinese?" It's "here's a set that contains no Roma women." Further, other "one-off" characters are erased--the actually-Chinese character is replaced with a "slant-eyes" stereotype based off a black character who is given no equivalent, and the Native character is replaced with a New Agey "this product not actually produced by Native Americans"-style "Native American."
Next, flat-out-stereotyping! The "Japanese" girl has tiny "slant-eyes" and an incorrectly-tied obi, and the white ceremonial makeup she wears covers her neck as well as her face. The "Chinese" girl has "slant-eyes," too. And guess what? The "Korean" girl? REPRESENTED ONLY BY GIVING HER SO-CALLED "ASIAN EYES."
Moving on, the "Spanish" girl. One, she looks mestiza--not "Spanish." And actually, she doesn't look mestiza--she looks like an old Western's idea of a "cantina mama." She's a Mexican stereotype being misappended to Spain. Likewise for the "Inuit" girls, who still have 100% white features. I could tear apart every single one of these, and in fact, in the past, I have.
It's a dreadful set I would bet cash was designed by a white girl who wanted to show how ~*~*~talented~*~*~ she is, with skimpy research and no regard for the representation she was chopping and hacking into little bits.
