Ouran High School Host Club Personality Types: Kyoya Ootori

Kyoya reminds me of Shigure from Fruits Basket, and in more ways than one! I think they're two of the most misunderstood characters because they both play their cards extremely close to the chest, and they both don't mind being seen as dirtbags if it helps them accomplish their goal (or if it hides their true personality). Anyway, here's how I see Kyoya's personality!

Kyoya Ootori's Enneagram

Wound: Kyoya was born the third son to a revered business leader. He needs to outperform his two older brothers if he wants to be considered to succeed the family business.

Wounding message: you must distinguish yourself if you wish to be recognized by your family

Core desire: to prove himself worthy of the successorship

Core fear: being worthless

Defense mechanism: Kyoya keeps a cool demeanor, and is sees the world as transactional. He is highly attentive to detail and keeps notes on all his observations. He rarely shares his true feelings or personality.

Strengths: Kyoya is level-headed, intelligent, organized, dependable, hard-working, confident, sly, and kind (though he would never admit it)

Challenges: Kyoya is vain, jealous, cynical, conniving, insincere, and inauthentic

When healthy: Kyoya connects more readily with his friends and shows his true feelings

When unhealthy: Kyoya withdraws his "true self" even more, relying on his charming mask

Looking at all of this, here's what connects when I go back to the Enneagram post:

Wound: 1, 2, 3, or 9

Wounding message: 1, 2, 3, or 7

Core desire: 1, 2, or 3

Core fear: 1 or 3

Defense mechanism: 3, 5, or 6

Strengths: 3, 5, or 6

Challenges: 3 or 5

When healthy: 3 or 9

When unhealthy: 3, 6, 8, or 9

Kyoya is an Enneagram 3.

Threes live in the Heart center, and tend to underexpress Sadness/Shame.

Wing

The Enneagram Institute calls 3w2s "The Charmer" and 3w4s "The Professional."

I don't see Kyoya having many of the qualities of a 2, so I suspect he's a 3w4.

Truity describes 3w4s like this:

This type tends to be more introverted, serious and focused on work rather than social engagements and relationships. Three wing Fours are consistently working toward personal growth and professional success.

Machi Kuragi from Fruits Basket is another example of a 3w4.

Subtype

I suspect Kyoya is a SO 3w4, though he also has elements of the SP 3. Here is how EnneaApp describes the social subtype of 3:

Status conscious, preoccupied with being regarded highly; hyper-aware of rank

Strives to embody group standards, have the "right" lifestyle, and gain prestige

Alters the self in order to present valued characteristics of most desirable group

Uncanny ability to "look the part" of social-role, including dress and mannerisms

Tends to confuse inner self with the world's badges, awards, honors, and symbols

Highly values credentials, titles, public honors/awards, and influential connections

Wants to know: "What school did you attend..." "Do you know anyone famous..."

Wants to hold center stage and "be somebody;" anonymity causes strong anxiety

Wants to be attractive to the whole world, "get to the top and look good doing it"

Attention goes to quality of image and recognition of their performance/abilities

May project an air of "I'm really above this place/situation...this is only temporary"

In business, wants to have the respect of powerful others; in love seeks "arm candy"

Identifies with projected self-image in order to convince self of having found identity

I think many of these points connect to Tamaki's all-encompassing knowledge of everyone's "credentials". While I don't think he's quite as attention-seeking as this image paints, he's very much in pursuit of validation.

I've only had one other SO 3 in this series, and she's a very minor character in Fruits Basket: Yuki's mother.

Tritype

With 3 as Kyoya's Heart type, I think 5 is his most likely Head type, and his Gut type is a little harder to place.

After reading the descriptions of 3-5-1, "The Technical Expert," 3-5-8, "The Solution Master," and 3-5-9, "The Thinker," I am having a bit of pull toward 3-5-1. Here is the description from Katherine Fauvre's website:

If you are a 135, you are diligent, focused, and knowledgeable. You want to be ethical, efficient, and wise. Highly rational, you seek systems and procedures. Detail-oriented, you like mathematical concepts and finding ways to break down and understand complex material. You are very precise and good with exacting details that others find difficult to manage. Often technical, you prefer to work with facts and logic and can, at times, seem unemotional or insensitive.

I do think 1 makes sense for Kyoya's Gut type, since he doesn't really seem to under- or overexpress anger, but he does get irritated easily and have outbursts from time to time, which is quite typical of Ones (...I say, as a one myself 😅). He also seems to stick to his personal moral code, even though that's completely inscrutable to anyone else, and he seems to like to do things a certain "right" way.

This is the same tritype as Hatori Sohma.

Kyoya Ootori's MBTI

Here's how I see Kyoya's Type Dynamics:

Ti - I strongly suspect Kyoya's Dominant process is Introverted Thinking. This can look like "Seeks internal consistency and logic of ideas. Trusts internal framework, which may be difficult to explain to others. Experience a depth of concentration that is objective and analytical." When stressed, overuse of this process can look like "obsessive search for the truth, detached, look only at cons, driven like a machine out of control"

Ne - I think Kyoya is an iNtuiting type, and he extroverts this process. Ne can look like "Sees possibilities in the external world. Enthusiastic and enjoys networking. Trusts the big picture, forms patterns and connections, which can then be shared with others."

Si - Kyoya clearly seems to use Introverted Sensing. He "Compares present facts and situations to past experience. Excellent recall for specific details. Trusts and remembers the past. Stores sensory data that is important to them for future use."

Fe - this is clearly his least-used (Inferior) Process. In times of stress, this can look like "use logic to an extreme in an emotional, obsessive way, hypersensitive emotional state in relationships, strong emotional reactions—loss of control"

With Type Dynamics of Ti Ne Si Fe, Kyoya's MBTI would be INTP, "The Logician", which he shares with Ren Sohma, Katsuya Honda, and, of course, Shigure Sohma.

Here's how the Myers & Briggs Foundation describes INTP:

Seek to develop logical explanations for everything that interests them. Theoretical and abstract, interested more in ideas than in social interaction. Quiet, contained, flexible, and adaptable. Have unusual ability to focus in depth to solve problems in their area of interest. Skeptical, sometimes critical, always analytical.

So, to summarize:

Enneagram: SO 3w4 (The Achiever/The Professional)

Tritype: 3-5-1 (The Technical Expert)

MBTI: INTP (The Logician)

Kyoya is defined by his pragmatic, often conniving, always intelligent thinking. He works hard to prove his worth, though he plays his cards close to the vest and rarely lets people see his true feelings, or his kindness.

Ouran High School Host Club Personality Types: Haruhi Fujioka

Haruhi Fujioka is such a delightful character. While I'm not nearly as deep into OHSHC fandom as the other two fandoms for which I've written, I actually think Haruhi might be my favorite protagonist of the three. Or, at least, the one I'd most likely find in my friend group.

As I slowly work on Ch. 2 of ichigo ichie, I think it would be helpful for me to get to know the characters from OHSHC a bit better so I can write them more comfortably. Hence this post!

(Of course Haruhi doesn't appear in the second chapter but shhhhhh)

Haruhi Fujioka's Enneagram

Wound: Haruhi lost her mother to illness at a young age. After that, her father was constantly working long hours, so she grew up very quickly.

Wounding message: Time with your loved ones is scarce and unreliable; if you need something, you must handle it yourself.

Core desire: to ensure her needs are met

Core fear: we don't see Haruhi express a lot of fear, but I think her frequent frustration with the Host Club's antics and her fear of thunder could both speak to her desire to be prepared, to make sure she's taken care of the necessities before anything else

Defense mechanism: Haruhi is very perceptive and tends to gather information about her environment to try and understand it

Strengths: Haruhi is perceptive, kind, responsible, insightful, open-minded, curious, independent, reliable, and even-keeled. She sees and accepts people for who they are.

Challenges: Haruhi can be stubborn, blunt, ignorant to her own feelings, critical of others, sarcastic, and is often unable to relax or have fun.

When healthy: Haruhi lets herself enjoy life more and slows down.

When unhealthy: I don't know if we ever seen Haruhi particularly unhealthy

Looking at all of this, here's what connects when I go back to the Enneagram post:

Wounding message: 5 or 7

Core desire: 5 or 6

Core fear: 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9

Haruhi is an Enneagram 5.

Fives live in the Head center, and tend to underexpress Fear.

I often see Haruhi typed as a 9 online, and while I do think 9 is in her tritype, 5 is much more accurate. The Enneagram Institute has a detailed write-up of misidentification between 5s and 9s, which I think supports my analysis of Haruhi as a 5. One line that really stood out to me in that was "Nines are disengaged; Fives are detached." Then it must be that Fives are more likely to stay engaged while nines are more likely to stay attached.

I think looking at Haruhi next to someone like Tohru Honda (a 9w1) can shed light on why Haruhi is a 5 and Tohru is a 9.

Both characters lost a parent at a young age. Both had to grow up too quickly and take care of themselves from a young age. Their surviving parent was someone doting and affectionate and somewhat outside traditional society.

For Tohru, this manifested in an unconscious belief that if she didn't absorb some of her father's mannerisms she would cause her mother to disappear, too. She suppressed her entire self to ensure her mother wouldn't leave. When her mother later dies unexpectedly, her goal is to preserve things the way they are - she doesn't want to let anyone else into her heart lest they take her mother's place. This is why she struggles to accept her feelings for Kyo - they mean losing her mother in a whole new way.

Tohru is fundamentally rooted in the past and driven by a fear of loss and change, and a belief that asserting herself in any way will bring about those things. This is why she's so accepting of others-- it's her defense mechanism. She is disengaged from her own challenging feelings so she can stay attached to the people she loves.

Haruhi, on the other hand, didn't change anything about herself as a result of her loss. She remained the straightforward, curious, and responsible child she always was, though her share of responsibility certainly increased after her mother's death. She prefers to manage things by herself, though she also is attentive to other's needs (such as wanting her father to rest on his day off, rather than attend the family visitation day).

Her defense mechanism is future-focused. She wants to be prepared for whatever comes next. Her connection to those in the host club is largely because she's so perceptive-- she's able to see the truth of who the other host club members are, and many of them haven't had the experience of being truly "seen" like that before. Haruhi stays detached, an outside observer who is only perceiving the truth, rather than making any judgment about that truth. Her natural curiosity means her mind is constantly engaged in deeper thought. She is not particularly concerned with preserving her own attachment to people, and especially not at the expense of her own needs. Her cluelessness about her own feelings is a result of this detachment; quite different from repressing her feelings because they make her uncomfortable (which is what a 9 would do).

Wing

The Enneagram Institute calls 5w4s "The Iconoclast" and 5w6s "The Problem Solver."

To me, it's incredibly clear that Haruhi is a 5w6. Haruhi has almost no characteristics of a 4, but has the logical, practical, reliable nature of a 6.

Truity describes 5w6s like this:

5w6s are practical, helpful, and organized. While still fiercely independent, 5w6s tend to be more cooperative and loyal than other Fives. They excel in troubleshooting and solving complex problems.

Isn't that such a perfect description of her?

Haruhi is actually the first 5w6 I've covered in this series! I've covered one other 5 (Shigure Sohma, a 5w4), and one 6w5 (Kyo Sohma).

Subtype

I suspect Haruhi is either an SP 5 or a SO 5. I don't think she's a SX 5; her focus is pretty far removed from her intimate connections lol.

After reading the descriptions on EnneaApp, I think SP 5w6 is the best fit:

Feelings of scarcity underlie the avarice for independent privacy and for hoarding

Have a tendency to save/accumulate for future loss (i.e. money, private time)

See home as the secure refuge from an invading world; seek protection of a "lair"

Have a safe, personal, private place - this will not be in a shared family space

Ultra-sensitive about privacy, aware of others in shared space, feel invaded upon

Can feel knocked over by people's expectations; obligation feels like a great drain

Takes little for fear of expected reciprocation; dislikes owing or being owed

Very self-reliant, rarely seeks help or advice from others; tries to keep life simple

Chief defensive tendency is to withdraw; very avoidant, non-confrontational

Intimacy difficulties; from connectedness & grasping to freedom & releasing

Repress "the bad child" within, feels unsafe to reveal that side; anger feels dirty

May experience "dry" depression; to "hold in and hold on" feels necessary

Anger can leak out in misanthropy; when in power may disdain "ordinary mortals"

Can feel alienated/deprived by forgoing life's pleasures in favor of personal space

Many of these points reminded me of the episode when the host club visits her at home! I also noticed that there were a few points about SP 5s being non-confrontational, which may be why she's so often seen as a 9w1.

Haruhi is also the first SP 5 I've covered in this series!

Tritype

With 5 as Haruhi's head type, and 9 as her most likely gut type, I suspect 3 as her heart type. Haruhi doesn't seem to overexpress or repress shame, she doesn't particularly seem to desire being "needed," nor does she introspect in the way that is typical of 4s. While I don't think her expression of 3 is particularly strong, I do think she is ambitious in certain ways, particularly in her schoolwork and career goals. This would make Haruhi's tritype 3-5-9, "The Thinker."

This is the same tritype as Machi Kuragi from Fruits Basket!

Haruhi Fujioka's MBTI

Here's how I see Haruhi's Type Dynamics:

Sensing: I think Haruhi's dominant process is Introverted Sensing. According to The Myers & Briggs Foundation, someone whose dominant process is Si "Compares present facts and situations to past experience. Excellent recall for specific details. Trusts and remembers the past. Stores sensory data that is important to them for future use. Keyword: Remembering."

Thinking: I see Haruhi's auxiliary process as Te. She "Seeks logic and consistency in the outside world. Concern for external laws and rules. Logical, analytical decision makers who organize the environment to achieve goals."

Feeling: This would make her tertiary process Fi. She "Seeks harmony of action and thoughts with personal values. May not always articulate those values. Empathetic, sensitive, and idealistic."

iNtuiting: and last, Haruhi's inferior process would be Ne.

This makes her Type Dynamics Si Te Fi Ne, and her MBTI Type ISTJ, "The Inspector." Hatori Sohma from Fruits Basket is another example of an ISTJ, as is Megumi Fushiguro from JuJutsu Kaisen.

Here's how the Myers & Briggs Foundation describes ISTJ:

Quiet, serious, earn success by being thorough and dependable. Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic, and responsible. Decide logically what should be done and work toward it steadily, regardless of distractions. Take pleasure in making everything orderly and organized—their work, their home, their life. Value traditions and loyalty.

So, to summarize:

Enneagram: SP 5w6 (The Investigator/The Problem Solver)

Tritype: 3-5-9 (The Thinker)

MBTI: ISTJ (The Inspector)

Haruhi is practical, independent, direct, and loyal. She values privacy and is extremely perceptive about others, though she struggles with awareness of her own feelings.

Ouran High School Host Club Personality Types: Tamaki Suoh

I've been on a bit of a Tamaki appreciation kick lately, so here's a look at his personality! I think there are three types that stand out as highly likely for Tamaki; I'll be curious to see which of those wins out (or if my guess missed the mark altogether!)

Tamaki Suoh's Enneagram

Wound: Tamaki grew up with his mother in France. Though his parents loved each other, and his father visited, he and his mother were not permitted to live in Japan with his father, nor were his parents allowed to marry. He eventually moved to Japan to become his father's heir as part of a deal requiring his mother to sever contact in order to receive financial security. His grandmother resents him due to his illegitimate status.

Wounding message: you are only part of the family because we needed you to become the heir.

Core desire: to make his own family where he matters, to bring joy to the host club guests

Core fear: not being needed

Defense mechanism: aggressive people-pleasing, stepping into leadership roles

Strengths: Tamaki is optimistic, genuine, caring, bright, energetic, friendly, honest, and charming

Challenges: Tamaki is immature, loud, obnoxious, needy, demanding, emotionally turbulent, competitive, and lacks self-awarness

When healthy: Tamaki is more "real", like when he helped Haruhi after a host club guest threw her belongings into the school fountain, or when he took a moment to honor Haruhi's mother when the host club came to visit her at home

When unhealthy: he tends to force superficial harmony and steamroll others into his own opinions

Looking at all of this, here's what connects when I go back to the Enneagram post:

Wound: 2

Wounding message: 2 or 3

Core desire: 2, 3, or 9

Core fear: 2

Defense mechanism: 2, 3, 4

Strengths: 2, 4, or 7

Challenges: 2, 4, or 7

When healthy: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8

When unhealthy: 2 or 4

Tamaki is an Enneagram 2.

Ah, this *was* among my guesses! I thought he would be a 2 or a 7, or maybe a 4.

Twos live in the Heart center, and tend to repress Sadness/Shame.

Wing

The Enneagram Institute calls 2w1s "The Servant" and 2w3s "The Host/Hostess."

Omg. Even if it weren't incredibly funny that Tamaki's wing makes him "The Host", I do actually think 2w3 is a better fit!

EnneaApp describes 2w3s like this:

Commands attention for self through establishing personal connections

Enjoys making others feel better, and is generally very skilled at this

Develop personal talents to attract; humorous; more direct about desires

Can be seductive for personal gain, doesn't question their own motives

More extroverted/image-oriented/self-promoting/ambitions than 2w1

I mean. Come on.

Kagura Sohma from Fruits Basket is another example of a 2w3.

Subtype

What with his role in bringing the Host Club together, I suspect Tamaki is a SO 2. After reading the descriptions on EnneaApp, I think SO 2w3 is the best fit:

Pride is tied to ambitious social positioning: who you know, where you're seen

Seek attention either for personal efforts, or via affiliation with powerful others

Feel attracted to people who are on their way up; ambition involves association

Infallible instinct for who is important, can sense/backup a winner immediately

Public image is crucial; strive to be valued for warmth/friendliness/expertise

A "master networker," can arrange meetings and bring various people together

Seek approval by being charming, upbeat, competent, and entertaining graviously

Known by reputation/the letters after their last name; strive for social influence

Unconsciously align interests with those of a mentor, employee, or public figure

Wields influence indirectly; has a large circle that can be called upon anytime

May marry someone influential or groom their children to become achievers

Can be flamboyant; can act provocative or obnoxious when feeling ignored

Sense of pride is easily deflated by others; can be pushy in pursuit of prestige

May confuse being noticed with being loved; driven by fear of being insignificant

Tamaki is the first major character I've covered in my "Personality Types" series who's a SO 2, but I did list Yusuke, a minor character from Fruits Basket, as a SO 2w3!

Tritype

While 2 is Tamaki's heart type, and I'm quite sure 7 is his head type, his gut type is a little harder to place. I don't think his gut type is 9, but I could see either 8 or 1.

After reading the descriptions of 2-7-8, "The Free Spirit", and 2-7-1, "The Teacher", on Katherine Fauvre's website, I think 2-7-8 is a slightly better fit:

If you are a 278, you are caring, innovative and protective. You want to be helpful, loving, and straightforward. You are independent and assertive with a heart of gold. You have a ready smile, a rapier wit, and a twinkle in your eye. You are fun-loving and enjoy people and adventures, nurturing those in your circle of care. You use your charming disposition to create an upbeat, positive, and action-packed environment. You follow your own muse but enjoy the attention and energy of a group of your choosing.

This is the same tritype as both Kyoko Honda and Kimi Toudou from Fruits Basket! Though, if 2-7-1, he would share his tritype with Momiji Sohma.

Tamaki Suoh's MBTI

Rather than looking at Tamaki's Type Dynamics (mostly because I talked myself in circles trying to do so), I'd like to look at each letter pair first.

E vs. I: Strongly E.

S vs. N: Leans N.

T vs. F: Strongly F.

J vs. P: Leans J.

I was struggling mostly with the order of his Type Dynamics, but also with the S/N and J/P letter pairs. I ended up going with N, because I think Tamaki is a bit more of an abstract, big picture thinker who makes unexpected connections, and J because I think, between F and N, he strongly extroverts F, where he could introvert N.

This would make his MBTI ENFJ, "The Teacher", which is the same as Kyoko Honda again, as well as actual teacher Mayuko Shiraki. His type dynamics would therefore be Fe Ni Se Ti.

Here's how the Myers & Briggs Foundation describes ENFJ:

Warm, empathetic, responsive, and responsible. Highly attuned to the emotions, needs, and motivations of others. Find potential in everyone, want to help others fulfill their potential. May act as catalysts for individual and group growth. Loyal, responsive to praise and criticism. Sociable, facilitate others in a group, and provide inspiring leadership.

Oh, yeah. That's a great fit!

So, to summarize:

Enneagram: SO 2w3 (The Giver/The Host)

Tritype: 2-7-8 (The Free Spirit)

MBTI: ENFJ (The Teacher)

Tamaki is defined by his outgoing nature, his penchant for leadership, his sense of fun, and his ability to see the potential in everyone.
