Are type 5s always introverts?

No, I don't think so, but they are rarer than introverted 5s.

A person I knew who was versed in the Enneagram and dated several 5s / was good at identifying them sat beside Benedict Cumberbatch on an international flight and said he was a social 5, but he's also obviously an extravert (probably ESTP?). So yes, they're out there.

I identify a lot with type 1 but also with some aspects of 6, I'm positive both are present in my tritype. Since both types are super ego focused, how can I tell which one is my core?

6s doubt their decisions, rationalize them, need others to agree with them, and second-guess them after the fact.

1s do not. They have a gut-felt certainty that what they are doing is the Right Thing, and don't need others to agree with them to hold firm.
