There is a great sadness in the notion (fact?) that we are not more unified as a great group of thinking, feeling, capable, human beings as we could be…as we should be. While I don’t overlook the beautiful bonds we make amongst our families, friends, religious groups, and communities of every level from humble neighborhoods to major assemblies of political leaders, sometimes it takes science to spell out an alliance that is literally built into our very bodies and minds. Mah good man (and hero,) Neil deGrasse Tyson marvels at the fact that the makings of life on Earth today belong to ingredients of the universe spun billions of years ago. Regardless of your religion or creed, do you believe that you are a part of something bigger than just yourself? Science tells us that we are comprised of atoms that have been passed on from generation to generation by a single source, the universe. And in such a poetically inspiring way, Tyson one-ups this smile-inducing statement with what he believes to be the most astounding fact of all, “…When I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the universe is in us. ” That’s what connects us all, that’s what you carry within you. Your mind, your heart, and the universe. Oooh, you shiny.
