This is the first thing people see when they visit our home. I placed a console table in our front entry because I like having a place to drop my keys at the end of the workday, to signal I'm home. The table and many of its accessories are from @chintzandcompany, from when I was the lead floral designer there. The peacock feathers were from our wedding; at one time there were over 2K feathers in that vase, but I've given many to friends over the years (we'll be celebrating our 10th on September 1!). My friend @matylda3427 brought back the Gunter Grass poster from an art exhibition in Poland. I love its weirdness. My husband Aaron is partial to the wood railing, worn by 100+ years of hands running fingers over the grain. The rail has a profile, not typically found in newer houses of similar size, that makes it really pleasing to hold. Details like that are why I love character homes. Hanging in the stairwell is a charcoal portrait I drew of my sister @hausofjohnjames, blown up into sixteen 16" × 20" tiles from a 1" photo. Aaron rescued the chandelier from a demolition site years ago. It was made in Spain and had almost all its crystals, true lead crystal that we painstakingly cleaned and strung back together once over a weekend, and again when I accidentally dropped the entire chandelier while attempting to hang it. The stories our spaces collect over time are what make a house a home. Every object and surface has something to say, beyond rules of composition and colour interplay. But a beautifully composed vignette is what makes the first impression, drawing our eye in and inviting it to linger. My role as a professional is to balance these forces, anchoring meaningful pieces within a framework of design.
