↳ A CLOSER LOOK:
Iris Day’s childhood was far from an easy one, though looking at them now you wouldn’t be able to tell. Even as a child, they were always able to smile and laugh with a bruised face. Being a clumsy and eccentric child, Iris was constantly causing embarrassment for their parents. At least, that’s what they’d tell them each night when they got home and were giving Iris their “punishment”. From an early age, Iris developed selective mutism and refused to speak to anyone. Except for the bees in their mother’s garden. To escape from the torment of their homelife, they often went outside to play in their mother’s flower garden. Specifically, they would chat with bees.
When things got worse at home, Iris would often run away and walk around Cotton Plant. The people around town were oftentimes nice enough to give them some food when they asked, but never wanted to ask about the bruises. One day, they stumbled upon a bee farm and was completely in awe of the sheer amount of bees and all of the beekeepers handling said bees. They returned to the apiary almost daily just to watch the people work, until the owner, an elderly gentleman named Clarence, finally caught them. Instead of hitting Iris like they thought, he took them in and dressed their wounds. At first, they still refused to speak to Clarence, but after he began showing them around the apiary, they warmed up to him.
When Clarence finally asked Iris where they got the wounds, they told him without any hesitation. Clarence called up the Applebaums, who were frequent customers and close friends of his, and begged them to adopt Iris. Luckily, adopting Iris was pretty easy after they threatened to take Iris’s parents to court. They did, however, get a restraining order placed on them and they were forced to move out of Cotton Plant. All through this ordeal, Iris never lost their bubbly personality and they took unusually quickly to their new parents. Over time—and through some years in therapy—they overcame their selective mutism and Clarence began training them as a beekeeper.
As soon as they turned 18, Clarence gave Iris a job at the apiary as one of his beekeepers. Eventually, they were also asked to help out at Garden of Eden, so they took up a job as the receptionist, the perfect job for their personality. Despite having two jobs Iris managed to maintain a good friendship with Clarence, but it was becoming clear that he didn’t have much time. It was no surprise to Iris when the old man finally died. What was a surprise, however, was that he left Sweet As Can Bee Farm—his farm—solely to Iris.
Iris takes the notion of “smile and you’ll be happy” very serious and is rarely seen without a smile. Their cute and naive personality is one that is often taken advantage of, but their family and friends are always there to deter people with less than pure intentions. Although they’ve been the owner of the apiary for 2 years now, they have yet to fully balance the stressors that come with owning a business and working part time at the spa.
