Jamie x Claire x Faith x Bree
I never thought I’d laugh in a woman’s bed again.
In 306, I am confused by Jamie’s questions to Claire after they arrive to his room. He asks her “why have you come back” ... she replies on how she just found out he was alive ... he asks again “but why” ... she then questions whether the is a reason she should leave. Thank you and I enjoy your blog (and safe travels).
Hello darling!!
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate it immensely.
I love this question. I love this question. I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!!
I consider this scene to genuinely be one of the most powerful interactions Jamie and Claire have upon her return in season 3. It is dripping with tension, doubt, uncertainty, nerves, fear—everything that real people in this circumstance would feel.
I am going to highlight Jamie in this response since he is the one you picked out especially.
This interaction between Jamie and Claire is all about what is not being said.
It is about the underlying yearning between the two of them.
The question they both long to know the answer to:
Do you still love me?
And even further, the question of:
Do you want me?
These two inquiries directly affect everything that comes out of Jamie and Claire’s mouths in this moment.
Let’s paint the landscape of this scene:
Jamie and Claire have been apart from one another for 20 years.
That is 20 years without hearing their voice, basking in their laughing, holding them close to chest, feeling their skin against their own…and 20 years completely void of the love of their life.
20 years is a substantial length of time.
Then on an ordinary day, Claire reappears in Jamie’s print shop. And it is as if he has been struck by a lightning bolt. He did not see it coming. He did not have forewarning.
But he is electrified by her.
Yet, he has no idea why she is truly there.
Jamie has no clue if after Claire returned to Frank she fell in love with him again, if she fell in love with someone entirely different, if she remembered him.
He has no clue what those 20 years consisted of for Claire.
Furthermore, he has no assurance of if she is there to only tell him of his daughter. He has no certainty of if she is there for him and him alone.
Keep in mind, Jamie has spent 20 years numbing himself to HOPE. He would not allow himself to be hopeful, to believe the best, to anticipate the future, or to do anything beyond basic survival.
So when his wife appears out of nowhere, it is undoubtedly going to stir up everything he has felt for her, but has long suppressed.
Yet the fearful side of Jamie cannot allow himself to presume why she is there. He cannot allow himself to think “Of course she has returned only to be with me.” His survival mode is still engaged. His armor is on. His walls are still up.
With all the courage he has, he fixes his gaze on his desire, and he asks his beloved:
Sassenach…Why have you come back? (Do you want me?)
Why do you think I’ve come back? (Do you want me?)
I dinna ken…You’re the mother of my child. For that alone I owe you my soul. But have you come back to be my wife again, or only bring me word of my daughter. (Do you love me?)
I came back now because before I thought you were dead (Do you love me?)
…
But still, why? (Do you love me?)
Are you trying to tell me something? Because if so, I know you have a life now and perhaps there are other ties- (Do you want me?)
I have burned for you for so long, do you not know that? But I am no longer than man you once knew. You and I, we know each other less than when we were first wed. (Do you love me?)
Do you want me to go? (Do you want me?)
No I don’t want you to go. But I must know do you want me?”
They are both dancing around what they really are burning to ask.
Do you love me?Do you want me?
What is truly striking about this conversation is Jamie’s eyes. He is overcome with desire for Claire. It is written all over his face. Yet before they proceed any further, he needs to know why she is there.
He needs to know if she wants him and if she loves him.
He needs to know if she is there for HIM.
And the exact same is true of Claire. She is desperate to know if Jamie loves her, if he desires her, if she is still the only one for him…the only one he loves.
From the second of their reunion neither of them has proclaimed that they still love or want one another. Those words have not escaped their lips.
So here, in the solitude of a room above a brothel, they are both aching to be certain of the reciprocity of their feelings.
They must know if their desirous love is returned.
And so Jamie finally asks, “Do you want me?”
He breaks the tiptoe and finally comes right out and asks his wife:
DO YOU WANT (LOVE) ME?
Is that why you are here? Is that why you came back? Is that why you stand before me?
And shattering every shred of doubt, she answers:
Whoever you are James Fraser, yes, I do want you.
And just like that, his walls collapse around them.
February 25—What Book/Season 3 moment were you looking forward to the most?

This scene is beautiful. Plain and simple. It is sweeter than honey.
It portrays everything that sex can be:
Intimate:
Humorous:
Vulnerable:
Healing:
Pleasurable:
Exhilarating:
Passionate:
It is a scene of pure intimacy and bliss.
After yearning for one another for 20 years, this man and this woman can finally be together without any barriers of time or space between them.
Skin to skin. Heart to heart: they may finally be one again.
(Yes. Yes I am crying.)

3x6 “A. Malcolm”
“Claire.”
This one line. This one word. The name of his wife.
I am convinced Jamie’s favorite word in the entire universe is his bride’s name. It is a name and word that holds incommunicable value to him.
But for 20 years, he could hardly utter it for the sheer pain that sliced through his heart if he did. When he would cry out for the lost one in the middle of the night, no one would answer.
But on an ordinary day, in the middle of a print shop, the extraordinary happens: this man beholds his most cherished treasure.
When he lets her name escape his lips, it is almost as if the very breath returned to his body.
And this man can say the name of his wife again and she will answer him.
I CANNOT STOP STARING AT THIS:
LOOK. AT. THEM.
Ok I made this collage originally for a post about my favorite season 3 sex scene hehe. I included this moment because it pierced my heart.
I have continually return to this picture because it is just dazzling.
It is a captured moment of pure healing.
As they remove layers of clothing from each other, you can FEEL the shame, loneliness, despair, and insecurities FALL OFF their bodies just the same.
Their joy and relief to simply share the same breath is palpable.
AND IT JUST MELTS MY WEE HEART OK!!!!!?? 😭❤️😭❤️
25 Days of JAMMF, Day 18: Favorite Season 3 Smile
3x13 “Eye of the Storm”
Oh dear GOODNESS. Sweet Jamie. His smile.
THIS SMILE IS PURE JOY because the lost one has returned.
THIS SMILE IS SHEER BLISS because the one who he thought dead is alive.
THIS SMILE IS PERFECTED GRATITUDE because Jamie and Claire are together.
This smile is a smile of a man who has all he desires: his beloved wife.
(also honorable mention to whatever adorable mess this is)
