Does it ever stop...the wanting you?
I never thought I’d laugh in a woman’s bed again.
“I never thought I’d laugh in a woman’s bed again...” <— I love this line so much in the book but the show edited it so poorly. Jamie hadn’t been laughing when he said it. 🤔🙄 Felt forced. Did you think that? Does anyone else think that? TY
Hello darling!!!
So sorry for my delayed response—it has been a bit crazy over my way and I haven’t been on tumblr a lot!
Now with regards to your question…
I certainly can see your point of view and appreciate it fully. It can be really difficult to reconcile sometimes how the book executes a scene to then how the show chooses to do so.
However, I do adore this dialogue in the show.
For me, I think the manner with which Jamie says this line is fitting for the atmosphere that the moment sits in.
The way Jamie says the phrase has an undertone of deep sorrow because he is reflecting upon the twenty years apart from the love of his life and all the times he felt hallow in another woman’s bed. Likewise, he says it fully aware that up until mere hours ago, he really did believe he would never laugh in a woman’s bed again.
The lack of laughter in the line delivery, I believe, is reflective of the awe, wonder, disbelief, and reverence for the fact that his one true bride is back in his arms again.
Thank you so much for the ask! I hope you have a super Sunday and enjoy the first episode of season four!!!
Your love is devoted like a ring… like a vow that is tested like a covenant of old. Your love is enduring through the winter rain and beyond the horizon.
-Bethel, Ever Be What is in a wedding band?
The two rings that rest on Claire’s hands strikingly juxtapose the two men that Claire has wed.
Frank’s:
Ordinary, traditional, smooth, acceptable, expected —conventional
Jamie’s:
Memorable, personal, rough, fused, unexpected—particular
Both slipped on her fingers and both have remained where they were placed. Yet which of the loves survived? Which of the loves has proven to be true across all time & space? Which of the loves presses beyond the symbol of a ring?
The love of a young man, who took a key, and gave the woman he loves the way to unlock his heart.
And never asked for it back.
To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.
-CS Lewis, The Four Loves
To love is the ability to offer yourself up anyway knowing it might break you. And yet…somehow it will put you back together again.
February 11—What Book/Season 1 moment were you looking forward to the most?
I discovered the show first and so there was nothing I was exactly anticipating.
However, with that being said, I was extremely hopeful that Jamie and Claire would one day be together.
Then when I realized at the end of 1x6 that they were getting married the next episode, well, let’s just say I was particularly excited for Jamie and Claire...to be together.
Needless to say, I was not disappointed.
