This is Stirling Castle in Scotland - I think it may be my favourite of the castles in Scotland! Lots to explore and see and do, and so much history. Much of it dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, with a few structures left from the 14th, and the newer front facing bits from the early 18th. Stirling Castle has also been used as a royal palace as well as a fortress, and many Kings and Queens have been crowned there, including Mary Queen of Scots. It's been well preserved and is displayed brilliantly - a must visit! Hope you enjoy this full look around it! 😀

Scotland part 2: the Highlands and more castles!

The Scottish Highlands are unequivocally the most beautiful place I’ve ever been and Glen Coe is particularly breathtaking. And the fluffy Highland locals are very friendly too! During our time in the Highlands we also took a boat cruise on Loch Ness and a stroll through Strathmashie Forest. On our last day we hiked to the top of Arthur’s Seat-with a few breaks on the way up- then headed out to do some more castle exploring. We stopped at Midhope Castle (aka Lallybroch) first, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a little emotional walking up the path towards it. Next stop was Blackness Castle (aka Fort William) and then Doune Castle (Castle Leoch). As interesting as the more gussied up tourist-y castles are with their exhibits, the lack thereof at Blackness and Doune Castle made them feel all the more authentic, like they would have been several hundred years ago. 

We also visited Finnich Glen where the Liar’s Spring from season 1 was filmed but unfortunately weren’t able to find the exact filming location- it was tucked away somewhere along the creek and as it was pouring rain we weren’t really up to hiking around searching for it!

About halfway through our 9 hour flight from London back to the US I was more than ready to be home and stay there, but now I can’t wait to go back!

I recently visited the beautiful Aberdour Castle in Fife, near Edinburgh in Scotland. Parts of the castle date from 1200, making it one of the two oldest standing castles in Scotland, with bits being added to it in subsequent years - the final addition was the walled garden in 1635. The television show Outlander also filmed some scenes here!

I visited Midhope Castle in Scotland yesterday and it was such a beautiful day! Midhope is also famously known as Lallybroch from the show Outlander - do you recognise it?! 😀 I have a little video of it here. 🌞 Scottish Castles are beautiful!

Let's explore beautiful Culross, the historic town where the hit TV show Outlander was filmed! 😍

Filming the Ardsmuir prison scenes at Craigmillar castle in Edinburgh. I had a chance to visit this amazing castle today. I can highly recommend this site as the views from there are phenomenal, Mary Queen of Scots spent some time there when it was a favorite hunting ground, and later in November of 1566 right after she had a baby, a close friend had been murdered, and she was quite ill. The castle is a ruin today, but it is fun to explore, as it is quite extensive with large grounds. At the ticket/gift shop there is a binder with scenes from the Outlander filming that guests can view upon request. The film crew was there for a couple of weeks, but the filming took place in a matter of days. They filmed outside the  outer castle walls then in front of the entrance, and along the inner court yard, which contains amazing tree, and along the outer courtyard on the right of the entrance was a scene with Jamie Fraser and Lord John Grey. The scene where Jamie needs to translate the Gaelic is a room today with children’s games. This room and some smaller rooms and hallways were used for filming  as well.
