There is #baseball history abound in #NewJersey and I’ve been enjoying taking it in over the last two days. #OvalPark in #EastOrange hosted some of the greatest who ever played the game. The park is currently closed because of the pandemic, so I couldn’t get great photos... But not much of the original is left. To save your eyeballs, here’s the text of the sign posted in the park that commemorates its history: “This is the city’s oldest playground, purchased in 1907 and dedicated on Labor Day in 1908. Baseball has been important from its start and claims a long and impressive history at the East Orange Oval Park. Oval Park holds an important place in the history of the Negro Baseball Leagues. It was used by the New York Cubans from 1941-1947 and the Negro National League from 1940-1948. The field served the Negro American League from 1949-50, and was a neutral site for the Newark Eagles from 1936-1948. Such great black ball players as Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, John Henry “Pop” Lloyd, Oscar Charleston, Chino Smith, Judy Johnson and many others played at this facility.” #NegroLeagues ⚾️ (at East Orange Oval) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuqYO2BRZE/?igshid=1udyczx54pf59
