All Business Cards vs Overnight Prints

When it comes to ordering business cards online there are three names that seem to pop up a lot in Google search results; Vista Print, Overnight Prints, and All Business Cards.  I wouldn’t call any one of them a premier printer.  They are there for the quick and dirty business cards that just need to get printed.  My preferred printer is Moo Printing.  While offering a superior business card they also run a bit more expensive than most clients are willing to pay. A lot of people might opt for a local printer but the biggest name in Pensacola has  relatively light weight paper stock and is a bit more expensive than the big online names.

Normally when I order I don’t have the opportunity to compare two printers.  This time the client changed their mind on what email address they wanted after the initial order was placed.  This afforded me the chance to see how two of the larger printers stack up against one another.  I opted not to try out Vista Print as I’ve seen their cards over the years and already knew what they had to offer.  Between All Business Cards and Overnight Prints there was a clear winner so follow along while we go through the score card.  

The Order

The client wanted 500 business cards with their logo and contact info with a matte (satin) finish and a thicker stock..  Since they didn’t want the back to have any info it meant only needing a single side order.

The Price

All Business Cards seems to have a one price all the time kind of deal.  Basically their low price doesn’t seem to come up in discount deals, it’s just already listed.  Overnight Prints seems to have a normally higher price but runs discounts quite often.  Its like the JC Penny’s approach to shopping.  Give client’s deals and they’ll order.  I’m going to list both the price I received and the normally listed prices.

Shipping Times

Shipping time frames are fairly important to most designers and their clients.  The faster the better since most clients wait till the last minute to order and lets be honest, most designers take a bit longer than they should in putting together an order.  I ordered the first batch from All Business Cards on 6/15 and received them on 6/21 for a total of 7 days.  The story with Overnight Prints is a bit different.  I ordered them on 6/23 and received an order of cards on 6/29, 7 days later.  The problem was the cards I received weren’t the ones I ordered.  They were for an entirely different customer.  When I called customer service they were very nice, apologetic, and offered to expedite the shipping of a new set of cards out to me.  I got the new set on 7/2.  Total delivery time to get the cards from Overnight Prints 10 days. Winner – All Business Cards (due to Overnight Prints dropping the ball)

Print Quality

So far we’re tied and to be honest the most important part is now up.  How did they look?  How close were the colors to the original?  How uniform were the cards to one another in each box?  I used the same file for both printers.  However, I had to adjust the margins because they have different cut and bleed sizes.  

All Business Cards

The cards were in a phrase, perfect for their price point.  They matched exactly what I’d ordered and having looked at about 50 of them pulled from throughout the box I can tell you that they were all uniform to one another.  Almost no discernible difference from one to another.  On top of that, the colors were a near perfect match to the colors in the original file. An A++ print job from a budget printer.  

Overnight Prints

The cards were far from perfect.  In both major areas that I look at (uniformity and color correctness) the cards failed.  The colors were much darker than the file I’d sent.  To the point that I’ll need to reorder from another vendor since they clearly don’t match the client’s branding.  Uniformity is another problem.  As can be seen in the picture below they range from the logo being full in view to being cut off and everywhere in between.  The client wanted the logo to go off the edge of the cards intentionally so with some cards showing the full logo it just makes them look unprofessional. Winner – All Business Cards (by a landslide)

Summary

If I had to do it again I’d pick All Business Cards.  Fast shipping, accurate color representation, and inexpensive price make it the option most small businesses would be hard pressed to find a competitor for.  With the botch in shipping, color representation, and uniformity it would take quite a change for me to want to use Overnight Prints again.
